Andy Carroll

on't be daft. Irwin was a great player and servant to the club but he didn't win them trophies in the same way Cantona did.
eh? cantona was gone when they won the biggest trophies..cantona didnt do the job on the european stage and in truth is arguably the most over rated player in premier league histry..he was good of course he was..but not anything like as good as many remmebr him to have been..not world class..irwin was world class..

Defoe swapped for Altidore has to be the best deal ever in terms of value

Rodwell right up there with the worst
I wanna change my answer. Rodwell is the worst

Holy crap, I agree with you of all posters.
Cantona brought something to the PL that nobody done before but the reality is players like Bergkamp were better than him

How was Shearer one of the best signings? He didn’t win them a trophy and didn’t make them a huge profit. Great player, but didn’t have the influence that, say, Cantona had.
roy keane had more influence on man utd than cantona...shearer was a great signikng for newcastle...the thing is...his goalscorin coincided with a period when tranfer fees ionflated massively..so he looked a bargain very quickly.

I’ve always said Newcastles downfall at that time was getting rid of Ferdinand. Shearer was a god up there because he was local. His goal scoring was up there with the best but he didn’t make the difference

Eh!? Far better? Irwin was world class no doubt, but Cantona elevated them. Ask any utd fan who was a more important signing and I'm sure 99 per cent will say Eric
i would aegue kjeane elevasnted them..they won the league with cantona and keane they won the champions league afterwards..when cantona was gone..
ferguson has also, i think, said he regards irwin as his best ever signing. fans are usually wrong...managers are usually right..im nit saying irwin was a better footballer, NIT TECHNICALLY..BUT irwin was the better signing..
cantona didnt actually play for that long at utd..

Cantona was the catalyst to get the club moving forward and winning trophies again, irwin was a brilliant full back and a model pro, but Cantona was exactly the signing they needed at the time
he was a good signing and a useful player..but they moved up a level after he left...they won trophies just before he arrived but yes he provided the spark for the first league title..but Europe was beyind united wih him in the team..irwin straddled both eras...
ferguson knew the limits of cantona though..saying to Roy Keane: "We are going to domiate England with or without you, but we can domiante Europe if we have you"
keane and schmeichel were better signings than cantona...but irwin was chepaer than all those and topped the lot as a signing...

Cantona was a role model to the ‘class of 92’ they wanted to play with and be like Eric, who set the standard, although he might have left by then he definitely helped lay the foundations of future success, given the longevity of irwin keane and schmeichel then maybe they were better signings, but Cantona was a more important signing

Exactly what I was about to say. Every other player in that top ten list went on to win a trophy and medal with the respective team they transferred to. Shearer left the club he won a trophy with, to spend the rest of his career winning nothing? How can that be seen as anything but a failure?

none of the class of 92 were remotely like cantona in any way.they always behaved like professionals and were team players more than flair players..keane was the most important signing as he elevated them another level..irwin the best signing for his consistency....

he didnt fail..he became one of, or the, top scorer in premier league history..

Keane built on what was already there and if you watch the documentaries they all mention about the influence Cantona had on their careers

ferguson said keane would be the difference at european level..
cantona built on what was already there-didnt they finish second the year prior to his arrival?

It’s nigh on impossible to compare fees. Cantona, shearer, Ronaldo (both times - £12m and £80m), Rooney all went for very high fees relative to the time, so you can’t make this judgement on a value for money argument imo

David Beckham said it was Kanchelskis he would watch play and see where he positioned himself. It seemed like he looked up to him, not Cantona.
