Americans see Jozy a lot differently than we do, don't they.

This is him getting slack?
I am sure that he is still learning and he is doing it in a struggling team. That will not aid his development. I think that American players tend to mature a bit later as they come to Europe, generally, after the age of 18 so they have not had a European apprenticeship. So he is learning on the job for the worst side in the toughest league in the world.
Again I would question our summer strategy when we bouhgt a load of maybes to add to a load of no hopers. Madness.

This for me. He doesn't get the time in the premier league compared to international football. He's a canny lad and its a shame.

What worries me is that we talked about this in the pub in the summer when all we had to go on was a few youtube compilations.....the general consensus was that the space he was getting in the Dutch league was masking his deficiencies......I just wonder why our scouts came to a different conclusion.

Look at this through Yank eyes - the guy has had a great year for the national team, scored a load of goals, set up a few more. Against Bosnia, which has a pretty solid group of players, he scores three, sets up a fourth. He was an absolute beast that day, he even scored on a free kick on the edge of the area (first and only time I've seen him take one, although some on Big Soccer say he took them regularly in Holland. He still tries to get involved every time there's a free kick from a similar position, Larsson and the like blow him off every time.

Now he comes to Sunderland, the team is struggling, he's struggling. It's really easy, even if not necessarily correct, for we Yanks to pass it off as he isn't getting sufficient help.

I can understand the disconnect. If all I knew of the guy was what he's done here, and to some extent Hull when he was a kid, I'd probably be pretty negative on him, too. But having seen more than that, I can't write him off, I see the flashes and keep thinking he'll turn a corner.

Fletcher hasn't set the world on fire, either. It doesn't appear Poyet will go two up front often (and I don't question that), so to me, I keep rotating them, giving each starts and hoping beyond hope that one of them catches a run of form we can ride for a few weeks. And no, I don't put that past Altidore. Even the likes of Jon Stead and Michael Rickettts have had brief runs of form in the Prem, and Altidore is still a notch above them.

He's shite. Lack of footballing ability or goalscoring instinct may not be his fault, but lack of willingness to use his physical strength (even Kevin Kyle did that FFS) is inexcusable. And it was clear from his track record when he signed that there was a very real possibility that he was still shite.

Terrible decision.

He is a plank and will never make it in this country, his positional play is dire to say the least, he needs at least 2 touches something you very rarely have time for in the premier league.

I said in the preseason tournament after he missed a 1 on 1 that he seems to have one type of finish - blasting it. Not composed enough to slot them in?

Someone should put the goal compilation up again and we can look at it again and see what's gone wrong.

Nice slotted finish against arsenal. Unfortunately the ref brought it back.

He looks much better running at goal with the ball than waiting for it with back to goal, he does need to use his strength better as he just seems to feel contact and go down too easily, but playing in our team is hardly gonna make him look great (Fletcher has loads of experience and he looks even worse atm) I think Borini playing closer to him would be the answer but we haven't the midfield quality to allow it unfortunately.

Tried to pick out the far post against West Ham and had it saved. He might be better blasting them.

The Americans like him because he plays in a side that create chances for him and he scores goals. Funny that.

This is part of the problem for me, he does seem to have some ability but he's completely the wrong kind of striker for what we need right now. He'd probably be better running with the ball in a (pre Sunderland) O'Neill setup that plays rapid counter attacking football. At the moment though what we need is an old fashioned number 9 who can hold the ball up, lay it off & then get into a position to get on the end of a cross or through ball.
