All quiet on the western front

Bearing in mind the original was done in the 1930`s, the battle scene is incredible:

Something like 1 in every 4 Frenchmen aged between 18 & 55 was either killied or wounded in WW1
When I see comments about the French surrendering it frankly disgusts me

The French army suffered around 6 million casualties, including 1.4 million dead and 4.2 million wounded, roughly 71% of those who fought. Slightly less than twice British losses

Verdun wasnt called the meat grinder for nothing

I often wonder how both sides never mutinied on a big scale. The French did in 1917 but they managed to contain it but surely years after slogging it out, they could see the utter futility of it. They`d have been better off getting out of their trenches, marching back home and overthrowing the rotten governments/monarchies that sent them into that tragic hellhole. I also wonder how many of those that came home were utterly mentally destroyed by their experience and how they managed back in a civilian world.
Quite a few Irish lads gave it a go.

The defence at Fort Vaux at Verdun was an incredible display of bravery that even the Germans acknowledged with a guard of honour as the survivors marched out of the fort after only being forced to surrender due to running out of water - they survived as long as they could by licking moisture from the fort walls

It's the ww2 where they didn't exactly cover themselves in glory.

Why not? It was Hitlers biggest misake of the entire war as he had no need to turn on Russia. Us and the Yanks had to resort to Nuking Hiroshima and Nagasaki WarCrime and Dresden another War Crime imo
Thankfully Putin is no Stallin.
Russia were still on the same side as the Nazis when the Battle of Britain was won, alone. Hitler needed a quick win, as the Royal Navy would soon choke Germany to death.
British fighting in N. Africa robbed the Germans of fuel, while aerial bombardment on a scale never seen before (in response to the horrors inflicted by Germany on Britain) forced the Germans to station a million men in Germany to protect it from Britain, rather than send them to the Eastern front. On top of the destruction of Germany's war manufacturing, RAF bombing forced them to concentrate much of their production on anti-aircraft guns rather than tanks for the Eastern Front.
Britain then acted as the point of invasion, training the Yanks in warfare, and opening up a second front.

Madness to declare America, or even Russia, ffs, as the sole winners of the second world war.

I notice you seem to see the Allies as war criminals, and Stalin as a hero.
Typical of your extremist sort.

In the mid seventies, there was a man in our village, around 80 year old.

He used to go around delivering leaflets. I think he as well did a paper round. He used to talk to himself, and every now and then give a scream out. Tommy he was called.

Us young uns used to take the mick a bit, but if any adult saw you,you would get a clip.
Sometimes he would just wander in to the road, looking up at the sky.

Cars would just pull over, get out and put an arm round him , take him to seat in the square. Someone ( an adult) would always come out of a shop and sit with him, hold his hand. For as long as it took for him to calm down.
If that was say 1975, then he had been in that state for getting on 60 years.
What he must have seen, I dont know.
I suppose one positive of his torment was how it showed me how a village pulls together to look after one of its own.

Same side is debatable but certainly Russia assisted Nazi Germany with access to resources and the none aggression pact. Obviously no single nation won the war but clearly Russia were massively influential as 27 million estimated deaths demonstrate.

That`s such a tragic story. There must have been many more like him too.

They suffered terrible casualties in the Battle Of France - they were hampered by inflexible commanders, poor communication and tactics that were rooted in WWI when the Germans were fighting a war of rapid movement. Not forgetting the country was still badly scarred by WWI.

It was Hitler`s number 1 intention to turn on Russia and defeat Bolshevism. He had no need or desire to invade France or Britain - his hand was forced after he invaded Poland and war was declared by Britain and France. He certainly didn`t want to fight a war on two fronts.

Fair enough, but watch The Sorrow and the Pity and you might change your mind. I did.

Hitler may not have been defeated without them, or at at the very best US/GB would have suffered horrendous casualties.
Find the "Russia won the war" carry on that seems to have become trendy amongst the anti-British sort a bit of a joke though.

The French 12th motorised division (150th infantry regiment) held the perimeter of Dunkirk while BEF were evacuated, the French army was poorly led & poorly equipped I'll always dispute that the French army were cowardly
Exactly. In fact, far from seeing Dunkirk as a miracle, the French saw us as deserting them at their greatest time of need. Different viewpoints from different countries.

You are mentality
You are mentality
Mental

The French in general were cowardly, and this is from someone who holidays in France most years and loves the place.
Just watch the sorrow and the pity and then come back and comment. If you don't watch it it's pointless. It's a French film by the way and about 6 hours long.

The French sailors in England refused to help us defend ourselves against the nazis in 1940. A lot of French hated us more than the germans. Fact.
No they weren't
