He wasn't backed...

We signed Clarke and Roberts, 2 good players from last season. Ballard and the excellent Simms on loan.

Neil has shat on us for f***ing Stoke! He should have moved his family up here during the close season.

Wr also tried to sign broadhead. Not speakmans fault he decided on stsying at everton

Ok so AN contract terms may have been improved but the clause enabling both sides to terminate early remained.

If somebody crucial to my work had a release clause in their contract, and I valued the need to have them on board, I would negotiate getting rid of it eg offer a pay rise conditional on a long term contract

I can only assume the club still wanted the option to be able to fire AN cheaply and have paid the price for that

If the new AN contract did not have the release clause Stoke would have had to stump up compensation and we would have been protected a bit?

Maybe they will learn?

Or it was AN who negotiated that term so he could do exactly this.

Rolling control was at his request by all accounts. Difficult though it is to take he signed a new contract but clearly had no intention of staying if a better financial offer came along. I won’t hate him for that but I don’t believe the “ not backed” line. It’s a financial decision plain and simple imo.

You can request anything you like when negotiating a contract

But if the other side take the line that we dont want you leaving at short notice, what do we have to do to get rid of that, then you negotiate

If you leave it in place and he is successful then a better funded club will just poach your manager - possibly at exactly the wrong time

And if it was no - negotiable what should we have done? Bin him?

Every term has its price

But if he was adamant that he would only manage on condition he could leave immediately at short notice then look for an alternative manager at a time to suit us.

What the people running the club did there was to take the cheap option thinking he would never leave. Big mistake

What he was essentially saying is “I trust my abilities as a manager as better than your abilities running a football club. If I am being held back by your lack ambition I want the freedom to move to another club at short notice to further my career”.

And we basically let that clause stand in his contract - presumably to save money if we wanted to sack him.

Neil had his pay increase on promotion. As did every player in the squad. It's normal.

Why are people acting like this is unusual?

In fact, it's so normal, and unnewsworthy, the club didn't even bother to tell anyone until today 😂

" If I am being held back by your lack of ambition "....He was on the dole when we knocked on his door

Neil has obviously been poached as as far back as 3 weeks ago and before they ejected O’Neil and finalised in principle at our away game last weekend..he only asked for permission to talk to Stoke Friday morning and yet deal done and dusted by 2 pm… surely not allowed by either the new club nor the player Efl fines or points deduction Needed! :)
