Alcohol

Do we have an unhealthy association with alcohol coming from the NE? Obviously not the only factor where we come from but so many threads on here have a reference to problem drinking in them.
I drink too much alcohol but how much of it is related to where I’m from both nature and nurture?

Working class industrialised areas based on beer . Maybe some norse genetics involving drinking culture ?

Nurture. I didn't drink much in the NE but that was bc I played rugby pretty seriously. As soon as I moved to the city it went off the charts.

The timings have changed though. 11am is now fine for a pint given we all start at 5/6am.

I have always loved a session with friends. It has enhanced my life and I still like a few beers. I no longer drink in the house unless we have company. I have had nothing but positives from booze and even the after effects are limited now.
It’s a shame for people who have problems with it but I’m not responsible for other people.

I grew up in Yorkshire with 2 Mackem parents. My dad doesn't drink, eats meat every meal and smokes. I drink, haven't eaten meat in 20 years and don't smoke. The only thing me and my da have in common is Sunderland. My drinking came from pub culture which is definitely not just a NE thing

I think there was a divide between north and south and working and middle class when I was young in 70s. I think this has disappeared. Booze is everywhere.

I think the correlation needs to be extended globally, not just for the NE. Other cultures around the world drink more heavily or regularly than people I know in the NE. That said, the culture in WMC for example for some people is they almost live there and I can imagine rarely don’t have alcohol in their system.

It's the cycle we lived to for so long
Traditionally a working week ( days )
Paid Friday and two days off
The worst message we got from booze was you may fall over and get a hangover
Like harry said I've had nothing but great times growing up to that plan
Toil ,reward
Today we have 24/7 work patterns ,nothing about booze is good,in fact nothing that tastes good is good and it will change
Gluttons are killing themselves early and I don't think the kids are as in love with it as we were

The NE has the worst alcohol related health outcomes of any area of England based on alcohol related hospital admissions.

South Tyneside is the worst in the NE, but the Hendon area of Sunderland is probably the worst small area.

How do we compare to West Scotland?

I grew up in Essex. The only difference in drinking culture in my experience is it's easier to get talking to people in pubs and bars here. But more fights in all

alcohol was part of every western culture as it was safer than water
thats a myth, people drank a lot of water, it was free and cleaner than we would think, also people boiled water.

The reason people drank beer is and I quote
" Beer may not have been a replacement for water, but it was viewed as a more nutritious alternative than water. Even though it was weakly brewed from barley, at the time beer was a calorie-laden beverage that pulled double-duty with workers and farmers who were thirsty and in need of energy."

going back to the op I think its just how we are brought up, bad news get a drink, good news get a drink, weekend have a drink, match on grab a drink, hard day grafting get a drink. growing up everything revolved around drink, so i just followed what I learned I guess. Binge drink was terrible on a weekend like, pleased those days are behind me, still have an itch but dont miss it nearly as much as I used to.

My daughter is nearly 23 and not drank a drop for about 3 or 4 years
Some of her friends are right plonkies

Think it has historically. Also more reasons to feel down up here, that can drive you to wanting a drink, unemployment, shit places to live, shit football teams, lack of facilities, shit weather and many others.

The source I got my info from is a Historian with a PHD, so I can’t see it being a complete myth.
