Now open for business, though you wouldn't know to look at it as it still says Maria's outside. Sit in, cafe style, or takeaway. Not sure if you can take your own drink in but there's an offie just across the road so it would be handy.

Anyway, here's the menu. If it looks familiar, that may be because it's the same chef who set up Mai's Thai and who did both the menus.

Not the cheapest, but top quality grub. May need to do a few specials to compete with all the Indian and Chinese takeaways.

Looks good to me.

Well it did, but early reports are NOT good. Chef has gone after one day. Have heard worrying reports of unsold defrosted starters - chicken satay and the like - being hoyed back in the freezer. Very disappointing really, been waiting for somewhere like this in Shields for ages.

Aye, but this is more like a cafe than a swanky restaurant. Do you know if Orangegrass do their buffet lunch every day or just Sundays?

Chips and deep fried lemongrass would suit the shields palate.
You wont get decent thai food outside of thailand. If it were decent it'd be wasted on the average NE punter

Change it to Alak's , popular name in Thailand, but then again so is Mongkut, but you could have a mare using that.

For the record, the owner of the cafe is called Alan. His Thai wife, who runs it, isn't. No idea why he thought that would be a good name. However, his wife's son, who is, unsurprisingly, Thai, is called ........ Alan!
