About 50 I would’ve said.
I was unknowingly in the middle of em prior to kick off just in front of the right hand side pillar that held the Fulwell roof up. I was a Roker end regular so wouldn’t have recognised strangers in that part of the ground. Bad vibes made me check around and I saw an ex work mate about 10yds away making weird sort of “ come here you daft get” eye gestures at me.
I went ower and he said I was in with the mags! They’d been rumbled straight away and soon as they revealed themselves about ten mins (?) or so it all kicked off. I’d went further back to get a better view of both “matches”.
I was in the Fulwell, near to the floodlight pylon, next to the Clock Stand, when I heard a shout of "United"
I turned around, to see a group of Mags, hurrying to the front of the Fulwell, to get over the advertising hoardings and along past the Clockstand.
A few got dragged into the CS, and took a kicking for their troubles, while the majority came under, a hail of coins and abuse, as they made their way, towards the Roker.

Fred Perry and brouges
The really sad thing for me is there are still blokes my age, who would have been teenagers / early 20's during the mid 80's, who still appear to be going to games with an eye on trouble. My main criteria now, on the odd occasion i go to a game, is where can we get a decent pint, hopefully in a bar with decent music and a seat?

Followed swiftly by where are we eating afterwards?
Fred Perry and brogues the usual attire

I only have two experiences of other fans being in the Fulwell. One was Man United in the sixties and they had one half of the end. That was allowed by the Police I’m sure. I was in fact in the Main Stand seats with my grandad.
The other was a dark miserable night when Hartlepool played Scunthorpe in a FA Cup replay. I was a Sunderland fan but that night I was a Hartlepool fan. About 200 Poolies paid into the Fulwell and I for one was surprised to see a squad of Sunderland in the cage. The Poolies stood to the right of the cage and there were some handy lads there but the home lads scattered them.
I was very surprised but then again it was probably before the Welcome to Sunderland banner went up !
I was in the Fulwell, that night, in 1972, with my Dad.
Bobby Veart gave Pools a 1st minute lead, but Scunny scored two, to win 2-1.

Nah no way..as I’ve just posted I can remember clearly looking across and seeing them in the Clockstand..100 max..they’ll obviously say a lot more.
None stop trains from 6am bringing them through apart from the flights into Usworth, not mentioning the constant ferries from North Shields into the deep water quay and then the swim over to the North dock, Jesus what a day!

Stopped down in Shrewsbury Friday and Saturday night and found a lot of the locals canny unfriendly like. Proper hick town. The Charles Darwin pub before and after game was spot on though.

Yep, we were in the Charles Darwin, not many in as last year, did you get any sausage and chips? We didn't 😂 @Bladecat

Pools and Scunny, played at Roker, because the cup tie, went to a third replay, which in them days, was played at a neutral venue.
Iirc Pools won, the right to decide, where the game was to be held, on the toss of a coin
They chose RP for the 3rd replay venue, and again, iirc the attendance was around 7,000.
Was it 1972. ? I was 15 and hard as nails.
I was 9, and had just finished a 12 hour shift down the pit, and only just made it in time for the kick off, after me and me Dad, windmilled the Scunny players and supporters, before the game.

Yes you are right. I was used to going in the Fulwell End by then. There was a canny mob of Poolies who must have been overawed by the sheer size of the terracing, after all it was a bit bigger than the Rink End !
I remember the Sunderland lads who numbered about fifty looked big and older and hard. They charged the Poolies at the back of the Fulwell and the Poolies scattered. I hadn’t seen owt like it since the Yackers ran in a northerly direction on Crimdon Beach faster than Dr Bannister upon the sight of a noose.

12 hours? That was a half shift to us 7 year olds

Brilliant, mate 👍 😅
I remember a few Scunny, in the Fulwell, but they sensibly kept their heads down.

Up till about 1972 when segregation came in it was routine for away fans to come into the Fulwell. They would usually just gather to the right hand side of the cage. Our fans will have done the same at other grounds. When Boro came in in their hundreds once the coppers just formed a line down one aisle to keep the fans apart but there was rocks and stuff flying between them. Same with the mags. Leeds brought loads in and I don’t recall seeing trouble though I was just a kid and we stood down the front.

Well I am willing to bow to your superior knowledge. I however visited Roker many times prior to 72 and never noticed it.
