No one wants to see us go down. Real fans want to see their team win silverware above all else.
Two posts I made earlier this year on a thread where the OP stated he'd rather have been in Wigan's position than survived....

"I wouldn't want a cup win to come at the expense of anything else. It'd take the shine off it. People mention '73, but there's a background to that story. Stokoe was brought in to save us from relegation and get people back into Roker Park, and he achieved those things. The Cup was the crowning glory of the season, but we'd also gotten ourselves right back up the 2nd Division. It wasn't a case of plodding along in the second tier and having a magnificent cup run as a distraction, it was all round success.

I'd just like us to win it whilst we're a healthy Premier League club. I don't want to have to sacrifice anything for it."

"We remember the side of '73, and we remember heroes. They are heroes. And they did the club proud. Some went onto bigger and better things, some stayed and got us promoted.
Now ask yourself how you'd remember the players of a side who on their day are capable of turning over the big teams, and yet overall were the same useless shites that got you relegated. Could you look back on them as heroes? I'm not sure you could."

My point was quite obvious.

Mindless gorms want a day of glory. Sensible fans want long term success.

finishing 15th-17th every season and surviving relegation by the skin of our teeth most years is hardly long term success
3 top 10 finishes in something like 40 years is NOT long term success
10 relegations in 40 years is NOT long term success

winning a trophy IS success, it's remembered for years.... what is remembered more fondly, 1973 cup win or finishing 10th under Bruce? If the Premier League is so important then you answer HAS to be the 10th place, but i'd bet a big chunk of my life that you, your dad and your grandad would say the 73 cup win has had a bigger impact on Sunderland and gave fans better memories

I'm in the 'cup win' camp but that is a bloody good point

Long term anything is possible. Short term not a lot. But you have to be in it to win it. You also really have to be in it to win a cup. As you're squad is better. The football is better.

we've had 6 semi-finals in 40+ years.... all have come when we were either a lower league (Championship/second division) team or when we were struggling (73, 85, 92, 99, 04, 14)......... we never seem to even compete in the cups when we have a 'better' squad

That's rather by default though as 'struggle' is all we've done since 1955 ;)

dipping between the top divisons with a 3rd tier anomaly (sp) is hardly struggling by any account, only to fans who expect too much due to success before the war
we are the 21st best team in the country statistically meaning on average we always finish 1st in the championship or bottom of the premier league, hardly a struggle
I do get what you mean in that we never do well, and to us suffering Sunderland fans whove watched years of dire football it does seem like struggling, but factually we arent anywhere near as bad as we think

if you look at the Sunderland seasons where weve finished higher than our usual standard youd also see pretty poor cup runs where as when we genuinely struggle we seem to do a lot better - so @RyAye s point of us having to be a Premier League team to have a chance of winning trophies is cack

Awww, that's nice. Wouldn't it be nice if the world was perfect & we could always do both. The world isn't perfect though & we have a very real chance of winning a cup. If that happens & we also happen to be relegated then so be it. The cup win will stand out in my memory, the relegation will just be one amongst many. The players? I haven't hero worshipped players since I was a bairn.

Thing is though, when we get it wrong, we get it spectacularly wrong. Being the worst team in the country twice in 3 years will take some beating. You're right though.

aw no doubt we have underachieved and disappointed on a spectacular scale, we have been utterly f***ing shite for most of my life, but maybe its because we expect so much that it seems like that
theres between 60-70 teams below us who'd LOVE to have had our years despite them being shit

oh and thankfully we won't be the worst ever premier league team AGAIN this year

No the world isn't perfect. We'll probably end up empty handed and relegated truth be told...

If we do win the cup, and do go down, then yeah you're right - so be it. I'll absolutely enjoy the win. But come May I'll be wishing it came in different circumstances.

I would obviously disappointed if city beat us in the final (if we get there) but I wouldn't be as gutted as id be if we got relegated. I just want a good day out at Wembley and to stay up tbh.

completely summed up my thoughts,
we look better in the league yet remain bottom, we'd probably make it til the final day and then get relegated on goal difference
and we've had a great cup run but Man Utd still favourites in the next leg and even IF we managed to get through......... City await

We've been relegated before and fought our way back and if we have to, we'll do it again. But football is not about surviving, it's not even just about winning. It's about glory. And beating Chelsea, Man Utd and Man City against the odds on our way to a trophy at Wembley and deserving every result is something that I would be proud of my team for and something that I would remember forever.

There was a time when Mackemdom jusdged itself not by the faule baubles of Sly Sport and having Neville and Redknapp leer over her drawers.

She judged herself by the pursuit of glory for mackem sake.

When you are dying in your bed many years from now, would you swap all the years of premier league mediocrity for just one chance to see the lads lift a national trophy at the home of football?
