Adam Johnson - surely not?

Wasn't it the daily mail who made the bollocks up about us going to loan Jones to stoke too?...

I'm not sure if they realise how the loan market works, clubs don't loan out players who they'd rather have in their first team to someone in the same league (unless there is a very special set of circumstances)...

Selling him for a decent profit on his fee - fair enough IMHO, if it's to fund some good players coming into a couple of positions anyway. There is no chance we'll loan him out though, it's pointless.

Be surprised if we let him leave on loan, If we got a massive offer for him i'd sort of understand it as it could help with the rebuild, but just to get him off the wage bill doesn't make much sense as the money we'd save would have to go towards getting a replacement in!

This is nonsense. Maybe Everton want him on loan but we wouldn't do anything but sell him. Why would we loan him. At a time when we've put Larsson's wages up and lost Bardsley and a few others from the wage bill. Johnson has a price of course but if he goes we have to replace him - we can't afford to do that if we loan him.

It would... but if that replacement is on, say, only 50, 60 or 70 per cent of AJ's terms, then some might say it is good business.
I'd only say that if the replacement was a) as good on the park as Johnson, and b) cost us less.

This is actually in the Sunday People today but follows a similar one I highlighted on PF about 3 weeks back.
Today's offering says Everton are interested in a season-long loan of Johnson - but not in buying him.
It adds that Sunderland have "found no takers since informing middlemen that they were prepared to listen to offers".
As I said last time, no way I'd do this unless a VERY good replacement was in the bag. Seems the reason (if true) is simple wage-bill reduction.

Do you think it is true that we are trying to get rid due to wage reduction still?

Could be another long season if the club are still trying to cut costs imo

It's not a secret that AJ is our highest earner. However, joint top scorer and most assister and chance creator is what you get. If we want to move forward we need to keep him. Simple as that really.

good players command better wages. has short not learned anything about having quality players is a must to stay on this money train?

how far do we cut costs? fukin ell man, we're in the richest league in the world, and we're still trying to do it on the cheap.

football aint like a normal business, Mr Short, you need to keep spending on it to improve, because our assets grow old, they're not like buildings, where they can last forever with minimal spend.

I agree, we need to keep our best players and add to them.

if there is any truth in it and the club is still cost cutting though i fear for us next season. Lets hope its bollocks & we keep him & bring in some more quality

I'd like to think not... also, I'd like to think this would only be done with Poyet's approval.
But if the same reasoning is applied by Congerton as appearred to be applied by De Fanti - witness the departures of Mignolet and Sessegnon - then we may see this happen.
I'd still like to think not... but I've got my doubts.

That's worked well every time we've tried it....

Can never say never I guess however, Poyet is a fan and I know AJ Is happy here. At the moment anyway.

How does high wage equate to better players? We aren't Man City, we are going to have to do some proper scouting, which we all knew about, so not sure we are surprised. The only bit I don't agree with is the loan deal. They can fuck right off

it brought in 16m to spend on transfers though. and took us backwards

I can't think of another 2 footed winger who would cost less than johnno .
The media seem to assume we need to sell but really they know the same as us about the financial state of the club .
We have already worked wonders reducing the wage bill by offloading half a dozen cling ons .

When someone has form for doing things it's not unreasonable to think they may do it again.........and our form for selling our best players stretches right back to when I first started watching the club back in the 60's.
The vast majority of newspaper reports turn out to be utter tosh and if you also apply logic to the article, it's pretty reasonable to dismiss it as rubbish.

It would be a staggering bit of business by the club if true and stop the momentum gained by last season's escape dead in it's tracks. The PR fallout with the fans alone would create hostility and resentment......surely people at the club must realise loaning out your leading scorer and most creative player because of the wages he's on is tantamount to raising the white flag before a ball is kicked.

not all the time, but with johnson, it clearly does. if gardner or bardsley were on johnsons wage then thats taking the piss. short sanctioned the deal to bring him here in the first place though, so why the fuck is he so eager to get rid of him if its down to his wages? we hardly spent anything last season, and stayed up by the skin of our teeth, and we're still on this money train.

if anything he should realise that you need to spend decent wages on QUALITY players to stay in this league, otherwise he can kiss goodbye to his investment.
