A1M Spenny Moor turn-off

Drove past last night and it was all lit up. f***ing hell

RIP the high street.

On the plus side there will be plenty of slave labour jobs up for grabs.
Paying more than most high street shops.

I don't get the slave labour comparison at all.

I do mourn loss of high street though. Like to see a VAT, rates overhaul to help high street

The pickers are locked in a robotic cage and wizzed around the warehouse.

sounds like the matrix.

edit. Looks like they have got rid of the cages

I'm certain they are not locked in but have a safety cage to protect them from accidents.. you are trying to insinuate locked like slaves

Not saying they are the best employers ever but how is it different from piece work production lines which filled the north east at one point

It's only sentimentality keeping people wanting high street shops. I think we need as a nation to stop fighting the inevitable. City centres need to move towards residential and service industries, not shops.

Craving shops is like wanting VHS. It's dead Susan.
Its not just being sentimental. Local shops provide a range of working hours to people in places well served by public transport. A greater percentage of the money spent stays in the UK. There is greater competition. Online shopping is great in many ways but a single behemoth is currently bulldozing everyone and taking its profit out of the UK. We don't make it, we don't sell it. We have some people working in warehouses who will inevitably be replaced by robots

You make some valid points, but UK retail and policy makers need to get with the programme and adapt rather than constantly harking for the good old days.

We could keep the high street going a bit longer with drastic change to tax and business rates. But people want convenience and cheap.

Make the tax system work to keep money in the UK.

I'm not saying it's what I want, but it's happening and we will be better for accepting it. The only shops that will exist in 25 years will be convenience and grocery shops.

Change the cities to be service industries.

To some extent the high street needs to be more about experience, restaurants, little shops etc. Business rates need dropping to support what's there . Somehow amazon need taxing better so that the competition is more even
People need to make their sites better cos amazon's is a joy compared to most unfortunately.

If anything it's the internet not amazon that's killed things, except porn, porns thriving

Not on the high street though. Long gone are the days where you could pop into town and purchase some top-quality pornography from the newsagents.

"Two packets of baccy and a copy of Hairy Minges Monthly please"

Sad that people these days will never experience that IMO

I wish I could give a half at like at times like these, I understand and like your nostalgia for the past, but I can embrace the future and have seen far hairier minges than I'd have ever seen in a top shelfer from Mcolls

I don't think shops will disappear completely. There are things I wouldn't buy online because I want to see them, feel them or try them on. So clothes, shoes and of course food. I don't think I'd get grocery shopping delivered by drone or whatever.

You can go to Dalton Park when it's busy and there's not loads of room to park. Imagine if they did open that too.
I live just round the corner and the run up to christmas has been bonkers, the roundabout has been backed up down the a19 sliproad at times.

I'm fussy as fuck with clothes and trainers, I have to try loads of stuff on and only actually buy about 10 percent of what I try on, I could never buy my clothes online.

Coming off the A1 Southbound there, to go to Spenny is a nightmare atm. You’re supposed to be on the left lane of the slip road, but every impatient fucker in an Audi or transit van skips the queue and cuts you up at your exit. Twats, impatient twats.

While we’re on the subject, that odd house between washy and Chester. If you’re going to build an extravagant detached house, why the fuck would you build it about 1 metre from a motorway?
