A sign of the times

Ten Bob millionaires pretending they don't care and think it's a fair price.

Ten Bob millionaires and 4 quid a pint dont belong in the same sentence

Be heart attacks for those people when they see craft gear flying out for more than six quid (most not having a clue of costs being incurred).

One of my lads was down the down on Saturday night.
He reckons The Cooper Rose at 9.30pm had about 10 people in it.
Back in my day you wouldn't be able to see across a place like that at that time.

Also as a sign if the times my Chinese order for 4 people has now crossed the £40 mark.
The Indian has gone the same way, Thursday night special 5 courses used to be 8 or 9 quid, now it's £14.

The hospitality industry as a whole will now be suffering, people just haven't got the spare cash for niceties such as pub nights out and takeaways.
It makes me laugh when I think about the uproar when a pint down the down went up to over a pound :)
The Cooper Rose at 11pm was canny packed tbf.

walked into a bar in Durham, been here about an hour, 5 people playing cards on a table, probably a pint between them, if that.

Alongside the obvious increases, One of the reasons pubs are finished.

The Albion (now Chaplins) late 70's used to always have a couple of tables of oldies all nursing a half all-night - the manager (forget his name) didn't mind and used to say it made for a better atmosphere as they'd be pretty much full every week-day night.

A pint of beer is worth nowhere near 4 quid. It's one of those products where they just keep ramping up the cost to see how far they can push it. Their attitude is pay it or leave it and various governments have used it as a cash cow over the decades. From the average UK price about 50 years ago inflation adjusted today it should be around £1.70 a pint. What was once a working class man's little escape is no more. We're already seeing the death of the pub industry and it's the cost of a pint that drives it. But let's play ten Bob millionaire and pretend we think it's cheap.

It’s like paying 10 quid for a sandwich just to get attention on social media.

When you see the prices of beer in supermarkets, especially abroad, it puts it in perspective.

Think you need to do some research into craft beer sir.

Comparing cans in supermarkets with pints in pubs

The £4 we're talking about isn't for craft beer it's just for an ordinary pint. I don't drink craft beer and haven't a clue what it costs. If it is £6 a pint more fool the people who pay it. You're just being blatantly ripped of beyond what we get ripped off for an ordinary pint.
A pub like for instance the Albion at Ryhope that has had a lot of money spent on it to create a pleasant ambiance. I'd expect to pay a bit more in a place like that over dives like the Dolphin or the Tramcar. So there will always be a variation in price. But that should be, as an example, between £2 in a dive and £2.50 in a better place. A pint is worth no more than that.

2.50 a pint tops in somwhere nice  You do realise places have costs like staff, tax, business rates etc. How much do you think pubs make per pint?

@DoctorMick how much you fleece customers?

It's a glass of water with chemicals in it. It's mass produced cheaply. Can't you see that it's the price that is destroying the pub industry. Some pubs don't open during the day or even during the week. You can pretend you think it's a reasonable price but the vast majority don't think that way. Soon all we've have is Wetherspoon's because while others are empty they are full. The reason why is obvious.

Have you seen the clip of the majority sat in Leatherspoons supping their way through the day. Most dont have a job, thats why they're in there then

So you think pubs are deliberately pricing themselves out and are going to put themselves (needlessly) out of business? Does that seem likely to you?

Where do you go for a night out?

A pub snob, imagine.
But those people you dislike are putting money behind the bar. That's how Wetherspoon's works. They sell more at lower prices and it pays.

I didn't say pubs are deliberately pricing themselves out, those are your words. It's the brewers and the government who are screwing it up. The pubs can only pass on price hikes they have hobsons choice.
I know lads who used to go out three nights a week. They go out one night now. It's not even the price that bothers them it's just there's nobody out so no atmosphere. So one problem has created another. Might as well just drink at home, as one said

Erm no, try again. You are on about people supping all the time during the day as part of your point. Do you think they are all young millionaires? Fairly obvious who make up the majority of day time drinkers for places to be packed and those types need to make the money go further (and they can do that in places like WS, which knocks out utter shite like Ruddles at 99p )

I'm not sure what your point is now. You brought up ugly people supping all day the kind of people you look down on. I'm just saying it works, it pays.
If I ran a boozer I wouldn't worry about how handsome my punters were, or what they did for a living. As long as they were in drinking my crap beer then it's happy days.
I had a Friday night down the town a few weeks back and the cooper rose was pretty crowded. We went to another nearby pub, the terrace I think it was called and there was nobody in. The black bull was quietish and the greens very crowded but it's small so will look busy. It was an ok night but I wouldn't do it very often. It all lacked atmosphere, you need a good mixed crowd in a pub. That's for me anyway.

The mixed crowd is the key really for me.
I was brought up in a pub. We used to get everyone, from local business owners, to binmen and pit yackers in. A real cross section, but in a pub, they are all equal. Local successes, rubbing shoulders with people they wouldn't ordinarily meet in their days, and vice versa.
All had one thing in common though. They were in the pub to have a good time, and meet their marras. We are losing that.
It used to be, along with the church, the centre of the community.
With the odd exception, that is gone now. And the local communities are all the worse for it. Sad really.

You don't sound as if you're a regular as you didn't know The Terrace which has been there for at least 8 or so years. How often do you go out? Perhaps you'll answer this question.
