I grew up with a profoundly disabled twin sister in Sunderland in the 50's. The attitudes back then could be effing shocking. A horrible level of ignorance really from often otherwise decent folk. The shame some parents were invited to take on board.
One of the most wonderful things I've witnessed in my life is the growing awareness of folk about difference and 'disability.' I'm touched quite honestly by the posts on this thread were awareness trumps that past ignorance;the testimony of loving parents; the massive shift in peoples attitudes since I was a bairn.
