Thankfully it means fuck all when playing Cambridge. Anything less than 3 points no matter what the team is come Saturday is unacceptable

Why?

It's not ridiculous to expect us to be able to beat Cambridge man
It’s ridiculous to say our u23s should be beating them. They’re a team in our division who’ll raise their game to play us as every team does. It’s the same attitude that people have where they expect us to win every game in league one because we’re Sunderland regardless of any circumstances. I’m expecting a tough game tomorrow given our current form and injuries.

Injuries or not we are playing Cambridge with all due respect we should be putting out a team that will win this one. I thought the days Of playing the likes of Cambridge was a thing consigned to my memory!
They are a better side than a 10 man Shrewsbury. Only lost one more than us. Home banker

Lee Johnson has given an update on the injury status among his squad as Sunderland prepare to visit Cambridge United on Saturday.

The Head Coach began by confirming Aiden McGeady will miss a sustained spell of action after picking up a knee ligament injury at Shrewsbury Town in midweek.

“It’s a Grade 2 MCL for Geads – so I’d say about 8-12 weeks out for him,” Johnson said.

“We’re disappointed, of course, because of the quality that he brings – it happened when he had a shot on Tuesday night and sort of stubbed the ground.

“He’ll have an extended spell on the sidelines.”

Dennis Cirkin was confirmed by Johnson to be missing a number of weeks with a hernia issue – the full-back is due to undergo surgery imminently as he begins the road to recovery.

“Dennis is about to have a double hernia operation.

“It depends what they do, whether they put in a mesh or they sew it. I would maybe say about four to six weeks, depending on how his body reacts.

“Of course, Dennis is still a young player and so the recovery process may be slightly extended, so that he can understand his own body and its way of recovery a bit better.”

Finally, the latest was delivered on Luke O’Nien’s persistent shoulder problem – Johnson described the 27-year-old as a ‘warrior’ for playing through the pain barrier, but surgery is becoming an increasing inevitability.

“Luke is having discussions with a surgeon today about his shoulder – it’s popping out every couple of days in training sessions.

“He’s been brilliant – he could’ve demanded this operation weeks ago, but he’s a warrior and he’s battled through. When it starts to affect your daily life, holding your kids for example, alongside on the pitch when you’re trying to hold off an opponent, action does have to be taken.

“We’re trying to find the best solutions at the moment – we’re certainly not grumbling, because it could be an opportunity for a young player to step in, and we also have very good players. That consistency is key.”

It sounds bad, but that’s nothing we didn’t already know.

Huggins
Cirkin
Hume
Burge
Willis
Xhemajli
O’Nien
McGeady

There’s 8.
McGeady and O'Nien (perhaps) are the major additions. They are a loss, without doubt.

Why are people talking about Under 23s? We have 14 players available, even if O'Nien is out, who have played in more than 50% of our games this season.

GK: Hoffmann
Def: Wright, Doyle, Flanagan
Def / Mid: Winchester, Neil, Gooch
Mid: Pritchard, Embleton, Evans
FW: Stewart, O'Brien, Dajaku, Broadhead

Add in Alves (on loan from West Ham), 22 year old Oliver Younger, and Burge / Patterson, and we have 17 regular first teamers available.

Team news

Lee Johnson confirmed in his press conference on Friday morning that Aiden McGeady will miss a period of 8-12 weeks following a knee ligament injury picked up in midweek.

Dennis Cirkin remains out for several weeks as he undergoes a double hernia operation, whilst Luke O’Nien is in discussions with medical staff surrounding his persistent shoulder issue.

Corry Evans should now be fit after only being able to make the bench on Tuesday with a calf concern, whilst youngsters Will Harris and Cieran Dunne are among the travelling squad – Scotsman Dunne having recently returned after four months out following shoulder surgery.
