A fact that made me feel old.

When lads in their 20's can't remember Roker Park.

Scary that like .
Lads on my course the other week didn’t know of the Bradford fire.

When I was a kid in the 70s, my ganny gave me a book of all the news stories from 1918-1938, Charlie Chaplin visiting London and that. That seemed like ancient history, yet looking back now it was only 40 odd years old, the same age I am now. So how come the 70s doesn’t seem like ancient history???

10 years before now:

My employment ended and a new part of my career was born.

Woolworths announced the closure of 807 stores

The inquest into the death of Princess Diana continued.

Joey Barton was found guilty and sentenced for affray

10 years before I was born:

President Trueman took office

Hitler committed suicide

The first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima

The Second World War ended.

Plus:

I was born 63 years ago.

63 years before I was born:

Everton played their first game at Goodison

Patents were awarded for the Diesel engine and (to Edison) the Telegraph

The Dalton gang were all shot by local citizens as they prepared to rob a bank in Kansas

The adventures of Sherlock Holmes was published

Viruses were discovered

I was born 15 years after the 2nd World War finished:eek:

Ancient history? Pah!
Summer heatwave of '76, remember it vividly.
Roker Beach, 10p mix-ups, jumpers for goalposts...

One of the most memorable concerts I ever attended was to see the legendary jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli perform at the Kilburn State Theatre in 1978. During the performance Grappelli remarked how he remembered playing at that very same theatre with his partner Django Reinhardt in 1938 some 40 years earlier.

My pals and I were greatly impressed not only with Grappelli's playing but also his feat of memory there he was recalling events that were to us ancient history. That of course was 40 years ago this year.

Watching Shack and Ford in their hay day while sitting on the straw or grass beside the touchline at Roker Park.
