England are very good at qualifying. Their lack of quality at tournaments is statistically overshadowed by this... to some extent the rankings (used for seeding) have become self-perpetuating.

England 6th France 21st - did it look that way last night??

A friendly game means nothing.
but how since 1990 we have beaten one top ranked team in a finals competition are we rated so highly?

in the same time, france have won both the world cup, euro champs and appeared in another world cup final

The rankings are only based on the last four years (it used to be eight), weighted in favour of more recent and more significant games. In that time, France lost home and away to Scotland in qualifying for Euro 2008, where they got only one point in the group stage.

They had to rely on some basketball trickery from Thierry Henry to scrape past Ireland in a play-off after finishing behind Serbia in the last WC qualifiers, and then managed to be even worse than England when they got to South Africa.

I agree it seems bizarre that England are as high as 6th, but looking at the teams below them, none of them has performed consistently enough over the last four years. Also the table always throws up strange anomolies - are Egypt (10th) really four places better than Italy (14th)?

Since '66 there have been 22 Finals (WC and EC):

England - failed to qualify or get out the 1st Grp Stage on 12 occasions.

Germany - have contested 11 actual Finals, winning 5 of them.

So we are humiliated over 50% of the time, whereas Germany play in a Final 50% of the time.

f***ing embarrassing.

Egypt have won the Cup of Nations three times running now (although only two of them count for the rankings) - that will count for a lot in ranking terms.
