Let's be honest. If the likes of Smith and Warner did come over, they'd only end up at Surrey. That isn't too worrying for England, because the pitches there aren't particularly 'English' are they?!

Don't think we can afford any of them to be honest anyway.

Cricket Australia aren't going to entertain that
No, they won't but ... quid quo pro an all that.

and ofc them coming over is prep for the next Ashes series here.....

But The Oval do have an ashes test in 2019... And Surrey are in the same division as Lancs and Yorkshire next season which would give them the chance to play at 3 of the 5 test venues for 2019 ashes if they were to come across next year which would be good preparation. So England possibly should be worried really...

Surrey have got Mitch Marsh, Moises Henriques and Aaron Finch for 2018.

I'm torn on convicts playing over here tbh. I do want England to do well, even more so in the Ashes, and allowing Aus Test players to play county cricket and getting a feel for conditions is detrimental to that. However, the ECB's contempt for the counties is clear so why shouldn't the counties look after themselves? Even if the convicts' motives are for their own gains.

The counties have been looking after themselves for the past 40 yrs, even your own county gave up trying to play only their own more than 20 years ago and now spend as much time as any other county scouring the globe spending a fortune on players who will never play for England.

The problem with English players playing in the Sheffield Shield is that there are only 6 teams so not much scope for foreign imports. English and Australians lads constantly play top level club cricket in each other's countries so naturally gain a lot of experience that way. Top level Grade cricket in Australia must be close to CC Div 2 standard.

Good luck to Crane he might not be the right man for the job but if he shows promise should be given a good run. If not him then maybe Leach.

Away tests in the last couple of years and when there's been flat pitches at home shows we need better spin and a fast bowler. Will only find out if people are good enough if we try them. Think I saw all I needed to see of Curran to say he's not a test bowler in Melbourne though.

re: your first sentence, yup, that's why I suggested a additional team. - And no way would I expect to to happen - But is grade cricket enough for English players to get ready for Tests? Don't know.

I have no particular issue with Australians coming here, but it's clearly a part of a plan to prepare and to be fair there should be some symmetry about it.

I think the ECB should also take a team out to the carribean - maybe it can be a boost to West Indies cricket.

f***ing hell Wayne, that'll be the same county who've produced more England cricketers than any other county in the last decade

If you're ganna have a dig at Yorkshire for anything, criticising them for their lack of commitment to homegrown players isn't a good topic to do it over

Like Curran he's had success in the white ball stuff, and has a "good attitude". Never seen him bowl but I suspect on actual cricketing ability he'll prove to be a long way short of Test standard, but we'll see.

As for Yorkshire, we have the standard allocation of overseas players per season and that's it. A far cry from other counties who do "scour the globe for players that will never play for England" and fill three quarters of their side with them. Looking at you Bransgrove.

Not sure how supporting the counties' right to look after themselves with no obligation to help FTECB came to invite a bout of Yorkshire bashing but there you go.

There's been calls for him to play ever since he was selected in the Sheffield Shield last year. He only played one game. Took 5-116 in the match (not too shabby), but it's hardly compelling evidence that he's the second coming of Shane Warne.

Vaughan says it's overcast with a bit of grass on the wicket. They're sticking with one spinner yet we're playing 2. Wonder who will be right....

Actually I don't it's pretty obvious isn't it?

They certainly have Brandon lad and produce way more home grown cricketers than any of the other major traditional counties but even they are obsessed with overseas players even if they are just locums for a couple of weeks. My criticism is always about county cricket over all. They are supposed to be a band of 18 brothers until it cuts up a bit rough for them then they shit on each other like the other 17 did when Durham could have went bust and then got nailed by the ECB.
