It is vital. However, ‘good’ managers are often far more successful at some clubs than they are at others. When you find a good fit it should be nurtured.

Dalglish did well at Liverpool and Blackburn but failed at Newcastle.

McMenemy did well at Southampton….

Reidy did well with us and failed thereafter.

Of course managers themselves think they can do it anywhere because they fail to recognise unique sets of circumstances that each club and playing staff provide. There is no guarantee that AN’s approach will be as successful at Stoke as it initial has been with us.

He did seem the right fit didn’t he?

Just seems like we finally had a proper manager- I’m so confident watching him on the sidelines- the lads on the pitch seem to give their all for the team and the spirit recently has been wonderful.

If you search my post history I’ve recently said on numerous occasions ‘I love him’.

The grant Mitchell looking ****.

So if I give the powers that be the benefit of the doubt and say they gave AN what he wanted I.e. a 12 month rolling contract, they have an approach that requires the manager to work with players that are purchased for him (with manager input) then they should be prepared and should already have identified the potential successors, right? and appointment of a new man in charge should be straightforward, right?
They might well have there preferred shortlist but the chances of the names on it wanting to come and being able to do so immediately may not be high.

Whatever the reason it’s strange it hasn’t been announced by Stoke yet?
Ultimately they only invited him to interview. By all accounts they’re also considering Dyche, Robins and Wilder too. There’s a very real chance they decide to go after one of the others instead - not sure where that’d leave Neil after that

A poster over on Not606 was saying Neil’s assistant would be in charge today as his contract of employment was different. No idea if that’s the case mind.
Alan Nixon said this yesterday canning would be in charge not the other bit though

Yes that’s Nixon’s story - Assistant is on a different deal and can’t just be bought out, would need to be agreed seperately

The board have put us in this situation, ultimately. AN was given pap contract and for all we know, these pellets weren't going to offer him a better one. As fans it's us lot that have to suffer this sh*te. It's going to be weird come 3o'clock that's for sure.
Particularly as we're kicking at 12:30

What a strange situation to be in.

Can't quite get my head around how we've slipped from looking really solid and in control of ourselves, to looking rudderless again.

Just hope today is a game we win and avoids the mood in the camp deflating completely.

There are some good managers out there at least, so hopefully we won't have long to wait.
Those few days that would be “not long” unfortunately cover two really important home games.
We saw us implode when this happened last time, and those games cost us more than just the points.
Hopefully not this time.

I still don’t understand why if he was definitely off to Stoke to confirm yesterday, why bother taking training and picking the team if he’s no intention of coming back.

Nothing announced from Stoke, no word from the club about whether AN is still employed by SAFC and if not who’s taking the game today. What a strange situation. Can imagine it’s been a very long night for some people at the club.
It's too early to announce anything. They'll do it later this morning.

What if...

Stoke offered a massive payrise.
Speakman says we can't match that, off you go to talk to them.
Speakman issues club statement.
KLD finds out and overrules, we will match that.
Stoke talks fail to come to any agreement.
We have a quandry, how do SAFC tidy this up without a backlash on Neil?

All hypothetical, he'll probably be announced as Stoke manager by the time I've finished typing this! Would you forgive/take him back if the above was anywhere near the truth?

Perhaps he was only given formal approval to go and talk to them yesterday, when in reality he's likely been in discussions or his agent has for days if not longer.
