So if I give the powers that be the benefit of the doubt and say they gave AN what he wanted I.e. a 12 month rolling contract, they have an approach that requires the manager to work with players that are purchased for him (with manager input) then they should be prepared and should already have identified the potential successors, right? and appointment of a new man in charge should be straightforward, right?

What a strange situation to be in.

Can't quite get my head around how we've slipped from looking really solid and in control of ourselves, to looking rudderless again.

Just hope today is a game we win and avoids the mood in the camp deflating completely.

There are some good managers out there at least, so hopefully we won't have long to wait.

Neil’s position is untenable here for me now. It would take a groveling apology to us fans who it seems have never come into the reckoning with any decision. Alex Neil is to stubborn to do such a thing so he will be off regardless.
It’s sad that football has changed so much that playing infront of 40 thousand fans who live and breath it doesn’t make a pick of difference to players and managers. They only care about the pay packet and location. Alex Neil will never get this again and I suspect when he’s a old man and it’s time for his autobiography he will count this as his biggest regret in football!
What exactly do you think he will regret?

I know fans who live and breathe football following Gloucester City up and down the country. There is no pecking order of fans.

To suggest that playing or managing in front of Norwich, Preston or Stoke fans is somehow inferior to playing or managing in front of Sunderland fans both arrogant and deluded.

Football rarely seems that organised though. Seems to be the only industry that operates in a multi million pound environment but has a handful of people actually involved in managing things.

And people think we will pay for Dyche
They need to stump up some cash for someone- I can’t take another Grayson, Parkinson, Johnson appointment. Any surname that ends with on can fuck off.

If it’s come down to wages for the manager they’ve really fucked up with this one.

The economics of this are quite simple. Overpaying the players leads to potential financial ruin. Overpaying a manager and maybe his assistant is far less serious.

At a macro level, doubling the salaries of MPs or judges had no effect on the economy but giving a million NHS workers or half a million teachers a big rise has a significant effect.

I think the board have been short sighted here. The cost of keeping AN could be dwarfed by the cost of letting him go if our progress is stalled or reversed.

The board have put us in this situation, ultimately. AN was given pap contract and for all we know, these pellets weren't going to offer him a better one. As fans it's us lot that have to suffer this sh*te. It's going to be weird come 3o'clock that's for sure.

Neil has signed 12 month rolling in deals at both Preston and Norwich so we can safely assume that's at his insistence. I've no doubt there'll have been discussions over the summer but it appears Neil wanted to get through one transfer window before making a decision on a long-term commitment.

It just goes to show how utterly important the manager role is.

Mate I’m not even sure anyone is going to be in the dugout today. I’m going early today in case they need a hand

Or I would if I didn’t have f***ing covid

It is vital. However, ‘good’ managers are often far more successful at some clubs than they are at others. When you find a good fit it should be nurtured.

Dalglish did well at Liverpool and Blackburn but failed at Newcastle.

McMenemy did well at Southampton….

Reidy did well with us and failed thereafter.

Of course managers themselves think they can do it anywhere because they fail to recognise unique sets of circumstances that each club and playing staff provide. There is no guarantee that AN’s approach will be as successful at Stoke as it initially has been with us.
