Grigg has scored 120 league 1 goals mcnulty has scored 1 but oh aye play him because he scored a hatrick against a non league side

And yet Grigg failed to scored against non-league South Shields - Grigg has done nothing for us to guarantee him a start, despite his record at this level.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say that the conference is closer to our standard than the Eredivisie.

General standard of football in league one is not great.
If you say so. I think it's neither here nor there personally. Dutch football's pretty poor.

So how did McNulty score three with the same tactics/formation? Grigg is the issue for me, doesn’t put enough in.
Like I said grigg has scored over a 100 league 1 goals man are people stupid or something grigg never played against Hartlepool !
We are playing with 7 defensive players 5 defenders and 2 defensive midfielders on the pitch and no out and out wingers how the fuck do people expect grigg to score you would need Brazilian Ronaldo to play and take on the whole team if we want to score playing that formation

Who cares if Grigg never played against Hartlepool - he hasn’t scored in pre-season at all. He didn’t even score against Shields.

Clearly you don’t need the “Brazilian Ronaldo” as we scored 5 with it yesterday.

I think, regardless of his ‘pedigree’ at this level, we can all agree that Will Grigg hasn’t pulled his weight on the pitch for Sunderland yet. Make or break time for him now he’s apparently back to full fitness.

It’s clearly something to do with the tactics and formation you don’t just stop scoring !!!!
Personnel?

There might be some Wigan fan who can put me right but it looks as though they usually set up in a 4-2-3-1 during their promotion season, usually with Grigg the lone striker (looks like he played deeper in midfield on occasion too).

That suggests to me we need McGeady, Maguire, and another in that 3 behind him. Power has played there and had 6 assists in their promotion season. However, I'd be concerned about the lack of legs in the two behind if he were to play there, not to mention McGeady and Maguire's defensive contributions, or lack thereof. So to me Power is in the holding two, and our best other option alongside him is Leadbitter. Can McNulty fill that role behind Grigg? Has he the workrate to assist with Power and Leadbitter? I don't know. I keep hearing about Embleton - maybe he could step into the role. Ross undoubtedly would stick Honeyman in there, which to me is a waste of fuckin' time. Perhaps a more sensible suggestion would be to play Maguire in the centre of that 3 and Gooch on the right - at least he'll give you the work rate. And despite a very poor second half of the season, he does know where the goal is and his runs cutting inside can be useful, he just really needs to get his head up more and look after the ball better.

In all, we could use 1 or 2 better midfielders than we have at present.

All of that of course is by the by if Ross is to persist with some variant of a 3-5-2.

I doubt I've watched a dutch league match in my whole life tbh. Ajax looked pretty shit hot in Europe this year mind.
They've got nee interest in defending.
TBF bottom half of Eeredivisie is probably mid-top end Championship so they are much more our level than a Conference side.
Exactly.
Open your eyes man. Grigg is playing absolute dogshit. I don't care what he's done in the past if he's not doing it now.
It's a fair point like. As I've already said on here, he's the one lad I'm pinning my hopes on this season, as slim as they may be. But it's quite a while since he was scoring freely. 18 months is a long time in football. If he doesn't get going, we've got massive problems.
