Yes I agree. They simply don't play enough first-class (I refuse to say "red ball") cricket. In the past they'd go away and bat for their county - often against world-class bowlers too. The players aren't applying themselves as well as they should but I have some sympathy as they don't often get the chance.
I think I'm right in saying that Jason Roy's longest ever innings is 4 and a half hours. And then he is hoyed in to open against a top class attack.
I thought Roy was worth a punt at top of order given the lack of options and form he was in coming off back of World Cup but he looks way out of depth there.

Burns and Denly must’ve played a fair amount of first class stuff this season as weren’t part of England ODI set up.

Also Root and particularly stokes have done well with bat this series. I just think Bairstow, Buttler and Roy have played poor cricket at tines.

I also didn’t like Buttlers comment after World Cup saying if he achieves nothing again after winning that it won’t matter. What separates the great from the good is the desire to keep on performing and progressing. Once that hunger goes at top level it’s going to be a struggle.

They aren’t going to enforce the follow-on anyway, so we need to bat as long as possible. Not much point passing the ‘target’ and being all out five runs later. Makes no difference, really.

Broad and Leach won't stick around long, runs are time later in the game.

Roy was worth a punt but at 6, and that’s not after hindsight, he does not even bat there for his county.

Now you have the world and his Mam having a go at him!

It was rank unfair on the lad

Cummins bowling lots of no-balls.

If they were getting called as they should be the follow-on would be lot closer. Umpires really need to start calling the bowlers for this, not just checking when a wicket falls.

He'd just adjust his run up once the no ball was called so there wouldn't be as many. Agree umpires should do better
