42 years ago, a NEVER to be forgotten day...over to you Sir Gary....

Interesting stats.

You weren’t there.A bigger mistake you couldn’t make regarding what the papers described as The Battle Of Bath Lane.

There was without ANY doubt, a huge dust up BEFORE the game as some mates of mine were there. As said before , two trains arrived in CS at same time resulting in a huge safc contingent that did what many on here have alluded to. I still have the Sunday Sun because of the stunning victory and the FRONT PAGE clearly states " Battle of Bath Lane". If you query that FACT, you clearly should be called nufctommie and not safctommie.

I was not part of the above as scrapping was never of interest, so I could not give a personal account of it such as @Vauxie and@Cochise2 have done, but it did happen ! Like I said, me and 3 mates got the regular bus through to Worswick St, and obviously at midday, it was calm with no knobheads waiting for bother.

My account was AFTER the game. We didnt fancy walking through the city centre to Worswick St and decided an escort to the station was the best option. If we had known how few cops would be escorting us, we would probably have gone for the bus option.
The numbers of pissed off jawdees waiting along the route - Barrack Road - Corporation St- Bath Lane - Westgate Rd, was very intimidating but not surprising since theyd been outclassed for virtually 90 minutes.

Escorts since then were better organised thankfully because that day after the match, it was an absolute shambles.

Stop explaining yourself to a sad Mag trolling on here. FTM

I was in the Leazes End that day. 16yo at my first away Derby with a couple of lads from Biddick Hall. One of them was serving his time as an App Fitter (Kev C) while I was an App Electrician in the Ship repair yards. Went to a few away games with Kev around that time. We were both doing our first year training in the College Annexe which is now Kirkpatricks Bar in Shields. Remember the fighting going back down to the station. Can't remember seeing any bother on the way up. Great Day though, never to be forgotten game.

The first meeting after the Rowell/"BOBL" game at SJP in Feb 79 was the league cup game at RP at the start of the 79-80 season. I think it is fair to say that one or two fans were keen to... erm... "continue the debate" that night...

Anyway, after the game, a fairly substantial "reception committee" had gathered up Roker Baths Rd/Fulwell Rd to give the away fans the kind of send off that nufc fans had kindly provided for our fans after the game at SJP in February. Because of this, the police decided that rather than go up Roker Baths Rd as usual, they would take the visiting nufc fans straight up beside the ground and on some magical mystery tour through the back lanes (and gardens) of Fulwell to Seaburn Station... As a result of which the local papers were full of stories of locals being alarmed to find hundreds of nufc fans trampling through their flower beds...

Some visiting fans also, rather unwisely, got away into the side streets opposite the Roker when they first came out of the ground. It didn't take more than a couple of minutes for them to realise that was a mistake and unfortunately it didn't end well for them...

The league game at RP later that season wasn't exactly a vicar's tea party either... IIRC the papers were always keen to have a "Battle Of" headline in those days and consequently "THE BATTLE OF HARTINGTON STREET" joined the previous season's "THE BATTLE OF BATH LANE" in the headlines...

Thankfully, of course, we've all moved on from those dark days and everyone gets on just fine now...

The famous photo with the copper with the dog at the front was taken after the game.If you were there you will know.I’m sure someone will post it again.Everything was quite calm until the mug infiltrators chanted ‘United’ then it turned frightening,as can be seen in the photo. It was over in a few minute when plod decided to do the job they were being paid to do.I saw no trouble before the game so I’m not in a position to comment on whether there was or not. This incident has been discussed on here before, without certain posters fictional experiences being posted.

My recollection of the Bath Lane experience is similar to yours, sorry if I haven’t made myself clear.

The photo - copper with dog - was taken BEFORE the game man. It is far too light for it to be after the game.
One of lads in picture is the elder brother of a lad I played footy against in the SSL.
The lad getting his arse bitten is known to a mate of mine. 100pc defo taken BEFORE game.

I missed the home game as away on holiday, and was gutted to hear we had hoyed away a two goal lead (as well as hearing the Bozo Bokota transfer had gone the journey).

Was back in time for the return though, but a few mates had thrown in towel so just me and young Jeffrey went through in my Mini and parked near some flats up Barrack Road. First time I encountered "ten bob to look after your car Mister".
Never thought they'd still be hanging around by time we got back considering it went to extra time and pennas !!
Probably only 3000 Safc there as Leazes 'wings' were sparsely populated.
Fantastic when Brownie equalised just on ft whistle.
And then to win a penalty shoot out v them....ecstasy !
Almost got the car kicked to feck when we shouted abuse at some mags on Tyne bridge coming back.
The feckin traffic lights turned to red and we looked back in horror as the mags realised we'd stopped and began running towards us.
The change to green came in nick of time:oops:

It was taken before the game you sad Mag whopper. I know half the lads on it. Your recalling above is simply a lie.
Have you got nowt better to do with your time than being on here?
Log off and complain on one of your own clubs message board about your impending relegation there’s a good lad.

You weren’t there, that we know. The game took place late February. It’s still reasonably light until 5.30pm.Do I really have to point out that the majority on the photo are facing down Bath Lane, including the plod on the horse at the rear. Some in the escort are turning to go back up Bath Lane to escape being bitten by the dog.If this photo was used in the Sunday Sun’s description of the Battle Of Bath Lane, then it took place AFTER the game.If not, then the Battle Of Bath Lane could well have happened before the game.I was in the escort, you’re relying on hearsay, everyone knows that.

Soss like, but ur talking bollocks.
It was dark by the time we set off from ground to Central station. No way was that photo taken after game.

That photo shows Sunderland fans being moved up Bath Lane after the Waterloo pub got attacked.

You'd never make a detective safc(nufc?)tommie

You're full of shit, you clearly weren't anywhere near the place.
Loads on this thread were, and they all know the score. It was on the walk up before the game, mags piled out of the Waterloo pub and got battered, police had the dogs out to restore order and it moved on up the hill, around the corner and down to the petrol station.
The Waterloo was shut when we went past after the game.

It was partly boarded up when we ran past after the game when escort disintegrated!
I did wonder at the time what had happened. Soon found out in the Blue Bell later that night what had gone down

Your question mark is not needed after 'NUFC'.

He's undoubtedly a Mag twat and a piss poor wind up merchant to boot.

Yes was dark walking down to the station as mentioned to a previous post we were kept in the Leazes for a while then let out remember fighting back of Gallowgate around petrol station then fighting a rearguard action down to the station. Few skunks were upended as quite a few of our lads charged back up the side streets. Will take it as an away win on the pitch and a score draw off it . However cant comment on before the match as we came in early from Consett and just got caught up in the escort down to the station !

Always had my doubts about old "safctommie". His refusal to believe what happened before the game confirms what many have accused him of being.
