4 kids suspended from school for

We don’t live in a religious country, let alone an Islamic country.

The book didn’t belong to the school, and the headteacher himself says “there was no malicious intent” from the boys.

Local Muslim community leaders have met with the school and have inspected the book.

The book has a slight tear and is smudged with dirt. The police are involved and they say there is “minor damage” to the book.

Way, way, way over the top response from the school. A religious book has been slightly damaged, and this somehow means kids excluded from school, faith leaders being brought in and a police investigation?

Crazy.

Quite an important story I’d say…if you care at all about the disproportionate level of influence a minority of religious people wield in this country. We aren’t a theocracy, if there has been “minor damage” and “no malicious” intent to a religious book I see no reason for kids to be excluded from school or subject to a police investigation. It’s lunacy.

I can understand their concern, there’s a rising level of far right violence in this country and religious hatred needs stamping out, but likewise I am uncomfortable at what sounds like teenagers being idiots, being turned into an anti-muslim hate crime.
Has there been a rise in far right violence?

That's the thing. There's a massive difference between genuine racial/religious hatred and kids being idiots.

Is this not part of the reason there’s a rise in far right violence though?

Forgive me, I’m not entirely clear on what you’re referring to.

There is, and this seems very much like the latter. I don’t think for a minute these kids are Islamophobic, it sounds like they’ve done a stupid thing, not a malicious thing.

There has, and we need to be very mindful of the dangers of far right nationalist violence, especially after the horrible scenes of the last few weeks with “protests” outside hotels housing asylum seekers. We’ve already seen far right terrorism in this country, we need to nip it in the bud.

Has there genuinely been a rise in far right violence

When was this, is this recent.

Are you REALLY trying to turn this thread into an attempt to downplay far right terrorism? Have a word with yourself mate.

Sue Hemming, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said: "Darren Osborne planned and carried out this attack because of his hatred of Muslims. He must now face the consequences of his actions."
