Have to say I don't think there is anything wrong with having a steadying influence at the top of the odi order. Work a single off every ball and you score 300 after all
Disagree mate,I think it is about getting off to a fast start when the fielding restrictions are in and the ball hard.
About 20 years ago I got up in the middle of the night to watch a World Cup quarter final against Sri Lanka, and saw them play a new brand of cricket where the openers went for it in the first 15 overs.
They won that World Cup that year and since then most teams have used that as a blueprint of how to play one day cricket.
Really attacking batsman over the years have filled that opening role the likes of Gilchrist,Sehwag,Gayle,Mccullum and Gibbs, yet 20 years on England still looking like you say to have a steady influence at the top of the order.
I think that thinking is about 20 years outdated.
Swann is right we have the openers in the county game who could play that role.
