He's already averaging 31 in test cricket, not bad for a keeper. He's an undoubted match winner too. OK he might only come off 1 game in 3 or 4 but we just got beat in 4 out of 5 games! If he plays hopefully Bairstow's average would improve greatly too.
How many games did he win

The ODI this morning with a very well paced, almost test innings for the first 60 - 70.

How many tests did any of the fops we've picked over the last couple of years win? None or they would be still in the side.
So you can't pick a test he won what would your team be

For the Ashes our master plan was to pick people who are predominantly one day players but who are not good enough for the ODI team for tests.

Somehow we managed to come up with a 50% success rate in Malan while Vince unsurprisingly failed.

Buttler made a very patient 60 odd before his stunning finale. Hales a solid 50 odd. Roy a less than a run a ball 180 and Rashid has 6 top order wickets in 3 games.

Sorry but its only common sense to give world class international cricketers an extended chance to make a go of it in test cricket. Every other team on the planet would do it.

I love watching Roy play, but there is no way he is a test match player, Buttler is a fantastic talent who I would give another chance,as I think he has that something extra to perform at the highest level, however can see other people's view who say he has had his chances and his red ball record in first class cricket is poor especially last couple of seasons.

Hales technique was found out at test level, the main point of my post was mainly that we should pick our best players for our one day side whoever they are including test players and not rest them with the World Cup cominh up.

Cook
Stoneman
Root
Bairstow
Hales
Stokes
Buttler
Ali / Rashid
Broad / Woakes
Wood
Anderson

Rashid would play if Ali is still out of form with bat and ball. Woakes would play if he can bowl 85 MPH plus. He's ordinary if he can't. Harsh on Malan but I don't see him as the long term answer.

You could had said the exact same think about Warner half a dozen or so years ago. The Aussies will be giving Finch a go in test cricket soon.

I would have Roy next in line if Hales or Buttler failed to deliver after a full summer in the team or any injuries occurred.

I understand we wouldn't have many grinders to save games. However, I'd rather lose going for it than lose a few hours later after never having a chance of victory anyway.

How many slips? How many short balls? An ODI bowler cant afford to be patient and work on off stump and short ball weaknesses in a batsman for a sustained period. You saw Hales in SA why would it be any different against the same accuracy but quicker bowlers? We have seen how his / their technique gets exposed in those situations. They aren't world class cricketers they are world class ODI cricketers. Mo Farah is a world class middle distance runner. While i'm over egging the point they are all different sports requiring different skills.

I agree on Rashid like.

Can people not work on their lack of technique or weaknesses in certain areas? The talent is there, that's the important thing. Most batman have flaws, that's why we employ batting coaches. To advise and arrange practise and drills.

Most players who arrive in test cricket are not 100% ready. Perhaps Root and Stokes in recent history. For most it's a learning curve.

Broad was a rabbit in the headlights after being struck be a bouncer. He has obviously worked with the help of coaches in the nets and has overcame his fear and poor decision making.

I'm sure the likes of Hales would have worked on his game back at Notts. He did score a match winning double hundred towards the back end of the county season. Obviously a lower level but runs are runs.

I think they can - I would hope Jennings for example has been working for his for example since he was dropped. I think what has made Hales, Roy, Buttler the players they are is working on their technique every minute of every day for ODI cricket. Hitting the ball out of the ground, hitting it 360 degrees and all of the qualities associated with ODI batting. It's possible for really good players to learn the skills to play in all 3 formats Root, Kohli, Smith, Stokes and others) but there's a danger that a) They just don't have those qualities b) Working on them thoroughly might take something away from what makes then fantastic ODI players.

Just my opinion.

Yea. I think some batsmen can play multi-format but they are very much the exception. I think it's easier for bowlers to adapt but even then the mind-set they have to adopt is very different between the formats.

Also invariably the top class players who play all formats are quality test match players first and foremost.

Loved watching the highlights, loved the whining from Smith, when in the first instance he was walking from the angle I saw.

Don't care one iota of the Aussie whining and hope the lads make it 5-0
