3rd ODI, Old Trafford.

Yes it's been fine for the last few days and is forecast to be for the next week or so at least. Sadly the rain just happened to turn up in the very place where cricket was meant to be played today but that's the vagaries of the British weather unfortunately

The full international season is required to fund the whole game though. Cut the revenue and the recreational game will suffer.

I’ve no doubt someone will reply about the 16.4 but it’s a separate issue.

Weather is a lottery. It’s been a good weekend for cricket up here.
It's not a separate issue at all. The sole reason that we're playing internationals in Autumn is because of the 16.4. International programme can fund the whole game when played at the height of the summer which is exactly why the16.4 is superfluous.

It’s also because the t20 World Cup was moved.

So the IPL wasn’t interrupted

Any other day apart from today, it would have been played. Been lovely all week and forecast sunny all next week.

Sods law.

I’m convinced that it wasn’t much different in the years immediately pre Covid but happy for anyone to disprove that.

I hate the 16.4 as much as anyone, but September limited overs internationals have been a feature of the calendar for at least 15 years, as long as I've been seriously watching cricket.
I suggest you look at pre-covid fixture lists. Doubt you'll see any International fixtures scheduled for Autumn. Not in England anyway.
Australia played an ODI at CLS as late as 20th September in 2009

Cricket has always been played in September.
Are you arguing that the season hasn't been extended because of the 16.4?
Autumn commences on September 21st.

I'm, a bit pedantically admittedly, arguing that cricket has been played in Autumn before (see the Pakistan series linked above)
But if today isn't even Autumn, and matches have been played up north later than this in previous years, I'm not sure what all the twisting about today is for.

Be pedantic if you so chose but for 1 year cricket was extended by 1 day in Autumn.
The 16.4 takes 1 month of prime time out of the cricket season to the exclusion of all other competitions. The obvious consequence is that the remaining schedule either becomes overcrowded and/or extended.

I'm fine with extending the season and keeping the depressing close season at bay for another week, but it's a risk certainly.

Not in the case of internationals though, which you’ve said is 16.4-related.

2019 old Trafford ashes test was played first week in September, remember thinking at the time it’s a bit risky weather wise, July / August would seem a better bet
