Also as a long term fan in the middle of a pandemic and with the game being moved a day and it being a 3rd tier game, 34k is a great attendance from both home and away fans.
And then me and my bro couldn't attend due to both being positive for COVID.... So there's at least 2 down. 34k is an excellent effort for league one - I'm glad the team turned up too!

I can remember a couple of games at Roker where there was only 7000 in the early 70’s in the second division. My second game at Roker v Spurs ( a then first division game) in 1970 attracted only 13000. So 34000 in a third tier game during a pandemic is bloody marvellous.
You're right' some games in the 70's & 80's crouds of 12 / 14k were the norm although attendances were low everywhere.

Simply outstanding, what a night.

Problem at this club will never be the fans
Probably as high as could be expected, with the current covid situation.
I was sat in the house on my fat arse due to Covid and couldn't go twats.
But under normal circumstances this should really have been closer to 45000. The club really should be doing more to get more people thru the door. Still a canny crowd under the circumstances.
Pleased the Fleetwood games off due to self isolating.

Me too😷

That phase around the mid 2000’s when we were getting 24k in the Championship when we were up near the top totally baffles me when you look at the numbers we get now.

After 4 years in div 3 and we are Still averaging 30k+
Bet it’s lees than 10 teams , maybe 5or6 at most
Yip.

It's hard putting into context but imagine it went tits up at the top prem clubs and they had

5 or 6 relegation battles with shit players
Then after relegation with shit players, yet another one straight away.
Then 4 seasons in league 1 with generally shit players and dull football .

I'm not sure after that dramatic change that many at all would.

34k tickets sold/given away is fantastic. It's a Thursday, covid rampant again, big spend for Christmas and New Year coming up. It is remarkable. But there wasn't 34K bodies in there tonight, no way, 34k is about 70% capacity, there was too many empty seats for that.
🤔
14000 empty seats then..
Wonder what mags would get after 4 seasons in division 3. Before the Saudi butchers took over your club thousands were turning their back on it based on attendances.

As a long term fan I can't help think 34k for the Xmas home game ain't that good?...... Tin hat / mag accusations pending. Maybe I'm just old.
I'm a long term fan and I would refer you to 72/73 season before the cup run started. There was no Boxing Day game but we stood freezing in the sparsely populated Fulwell End many times. I doubt we would have pulled 15,000 that season. Couldn't get a cup final ticket for love nor money due to the 50,000 who had never missed a game. Fixtures were usually manipulated so we played the Mags or Middlesbrough on Boxing Day, thus boosting the crowd so I reckon 34,000 on a cold winter night with restricted away support and covid is a hell of a crowd.

Sticking to facts for a moment in this crazy thread.... here's a few key ones just to remind anyone who needs reminding that our attendances show we are - comfortably - the biggest club outside of the Premier League.

(nb: we all know the context re: relegation battles / shit-head footballers / inept owners. Others have had similar but rarely to the same degree, one or two apart)
  • Sunderland ARE currently the best supported team in the EFL - fact
  • That's not just League One but the Championship as well. Clubs who have designs on being PL next season are NOWHERE NEAR us in terms of punters through the turnstiles (WBA are the closest.. but we still bring in 33% MORE fans than they do)
  • The nearest to us in the whole of the EFL are Sheff Utd with an average of 27.4k - still 10% below SAFC. We typically attract 15% more fans than former European Cup winners, Notts Forest.
  • We have an average crowd that dwarfs those of 6 Premier League clubs and is close to another 2 (and will probably surpass) - top ten teams (& heavily-invested-in) Wolves & Brighton.
And to give you an idea of how big we are in League 1 terms........
  • In League 1 we have an average of 36% more than our nearest rivals - Sheff Weds (who most will agree are way too big for the division)
  • You could combine together the typical attendee numbers of seven other league 1 clubs (inc promotions rivals Wycombe) and Sunderland AFC would still have more support.....
  • In fact, you could add together average attendances of our top 6 rivals Rotherham, Wigan AND Oxford but SAFC fans would still have 4k more fans than those three clubs combined
QED - anyone who suggests that our fan base and home crowds aren't some of the most impressive in the whole of British football are talking utter crap.. or simply on an ill-thought-out wind-up.

Don't let anyone ever tell you that we aren't one of the biggest clubs in this country. Our fans prove it.

No, im stating it didnt sound good on the tele, you silly sausage
Because without doubt, that is what determines how good the atmosphere actually was in the ground. Me and the other 34 odd thousand stand corrected mate.

In the future I will ignore the evidence of my own eyes and ears and wait till I get home and ask you how good it was.
