We've had 3 top 10 finishes in the top division since 1956. In that same timescale (65 years) we've averaged over 42k on 5 occasions. 42k was ample.

Like I say we were 6th in the PL and pulled in crowds of 35k and 36k in consecutive games. In my opinion we have a core of 25/30k of some of the most devoted fans in World football and another 10/12k floaters.
2000-2001 season
19 games - 19 attendances over 42k
Lowest attendance - 44k
If we’re doing well in the top flight
We’ve done well in the top flight about 10 seasons in our near 150 year history
Well exactly, if we were doing well regularly 42k would be to small.

1 season in 66 years then! Tbf I think we had 2 seasons in a row where we averaged over 45k when we were on a high under Reid but my point still stands. 42k is adequate for a club that has only averaged more than than 5 times in the past 66 seasons. Would have created more of a demand for tickets as well when our crowds were around 38-41k.

But we haven’t in our history done it for a sustained period. Therefore haven’t got 45k regular attenders. Nearly all premier league clubs don’t have a capacity based on what they can draw in for one game a season. Arsenal could probably fill a 80k seater stadium a couple times a season but didn’t build one.

Demand can change
The Mags had an average of 16000 in the early nineties

Agree. We had an average of 14k in 1989. By 1999 we had an average of 39k. Generally, and historically speaking 42k was great for us. Stadium looked better, and the atmosphere would have been better with fewer empty seats.

OK let's rip down the premier concourse and we'll have full houses regularly.

FFS.

Not sure if another club would get crowds the size of ours after 4 seasons in div 3 -man city did but for shorter periods -so I agree we have a very sizable hard core support-not sure the stadium was built with so long in this league in mind but credit to” our”fan base for sticking with us through this period

Of course they would . I like Sunderland and you have cracking support which is more impressive now than it has been for a while. This delusion of no other clubs being able to match your support 4 seasons in the third tier is ridiculous though .

As for ground capacity it’s well known that Sunderland gave away thousands of free tickets in the premier league to help fill up the ground . That stopped once you got relegated to the championship hence the big drop in crowds from 40+ to below 30k

Didn’t say they wouldn’t -said not sure ?
Has anybody else?
You could well be right but would be interesting to see if some of the media darling clubs would still get big support when in the same predicament
Just for crack sake who do you think would after back to back relegations and 4 seasons ?

And as a season ticket holder I never once seen or heard of any tickets being given away. Offers on tickets, yes. Freebies, certainly not.

Mag.

As a long term fan I can't help think 34k for the Xmas home game ain't that good?...... Tin hat / mag accusations pending. Maybe I'm just old.
I'm a long term fan also. I can remember 45000+ every home game. I can also remember 12 - 15,000 at home games quite regularly when we were a mediocre old 2nd Division club. This sort of attendance in tier 3 is quite brilliant.

Isn't it strange how followers of random clubs (no idea who you support) are well aware of thousands of free tickets being handed out, yet me a SAFC season ticket holder living in Sunderland has never seen it?

There's probably a handful of clubs would get our crowds at this level for this long. Mags, Man United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Everton.

Well Leeds only had 36 k yesterday and yet not far for a few Burnley fans to make the trip.... Our crowds will increase over the next few weeks

And at least one team in that list has given away tickets recently to boost capacity

Keep reading further down the article and it mentions the freebies regularly given out. Don’t see why people get their knickers in a twist over it. Ok it inflates your attendance but even without them you’d still have been bringing in good crowds , but not the regular 40K+ that you pulled in

Man Utd , Liverpool , Everton , Newcastle, Arsenal , Spurs

Those 6 I’m pretty sure would, then there’s maybe an handful of clubs max who wouldn’t be far off or would match what you’re getting now. Doubt we’ll ever find out though .
Don’t be silly .

Tickets absolutely were given away like. I worked in the offices behind the ground and participated in the mail-shot process and the returned letters.
Always said this was as likely to be a problem as a benefit because people I knew at school that never went to games went to the odd freebie saw a naff game (some Southampton game) and thought "why would I pay for that". Murray had a thing about out attendancing the Mags did he not? Think that was the route of it.
