You're missing the point. Even if the surrounding clubs only pull in less than 5,000 average crowds, that's 5,000 supporters that aren't going to turn up to support the other club.

I didn't even mention the likes of Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, etc. I can't think of another area of the country where there are so many professional football clubs in such a relatively small area.

Bolton's support is remarkably good considering we have one of the most successful clubs in the world and one of the richest on our doorstep. To be third behind those two is no mean feat.

london?.

3,000 fans at home...

You couldn't make it up

unbelievable man.

mint support, us. We've got Bury, Rochdale & Oldham down the road and spend saturdays shopping with the missus AND still manage 3,000 at home.

I don't even mind Bolton but that forum is full of silly bellends. That comment has riled me like so he's probably achieved what he was after.

18,000 in the Championship and we've been in the bottom half all season.

so what's happened tomorrow then?

I hate criticising Bolton but when that messageboard is dishing out shit like they are, I can't resist.

great achievement given the catchment area and im pretty sure Bolton are one of the teams where attendances are actually up given the economic climate.

That said, im completely bemused by the Argument, ''we have the best fans because we do other things instead of going to games'' surely support is just that, support, we've won fuck all for decades, consistently shit and still get average attendances over 40k.

Also a lot of your fans on that forum, are frankly f***ing knobs, only Sunderland, shit team etc.
I know you've come on here in peace and fair do's but talking about catchment areas, about 60% of ours is the North Sea and we have a bigger, more successful club in Newcastle 12 miles up the road (can of worms opened) taking the lions share of young fans via indoctrination and Geordie nation propaganda, we dont get people saying 'your support is class' or expect it, because come feast or famine we will be there supporting our club, surely even you must be thinking that crowd is a shambles.

Seems a strange decision to me that once the away end is sold out it isn't an all ticket game. Asking for trouble.

Season ticket holders don't get cup tickets included and it's pay on the day. Why would anyone buy a ticket in advance? It's not likely to be sold out.

neither do we, all we get is the opportunity to reserve our seat for the game, costs extra for every cup game but we still got around 26k for Morecambe and 32k for Boro.

You can't even begin to compare the catchment area of your club to ours. How many supporters do you think would lose to Newcastle if they'd won 19 league titles and two Champions League titles, in the last couple of decades? That's before we even start talking about Man City, or even Blackburn's league titles.

neither do we, all we get is the opportunity to reserve our seat for the game, costs extra for every cup game but we still got around 26k for Morecambe and 32k for Boro.

That's because you're a much bigger club than we are. You're comparing apples with oranges.

Some of you lot need a geography lesson. Bolton is in an area surrounded by clubs like Man Utd, Man City, Blackburn, Wigan, Burnley, Blackpool, Preston, etc. Despite that and despite the fact that we haven't won a major trophy since 1958 and have never won the league, historically we are still the third best supported club in the immediate area. Only Man Utd and Man City have higher average attendances than us since the war.
We swamped you in the 75/76 season both teams going for promotion and you were top of the league at the time, there were Sunderland fans all over the ground. Both teams were still in with a chance of promotion in the return fixture and your turn out was piss poor at Roker, I was at both games so don't try telling me what great support you've got, if we'd still had a chance of promotion with three games to go we'd have have been down there in our thousands.
(where were you)

I was there and there weren't 'Sunderland fans all over the ground'. Most were in the Embankment End and Burnden Stand. I'd say 10,000 tops.

someone on that forum of theirs is genuinely trying to claim they've got the best fans in the land because they've got better things to do than support their team. Fuckwits.

Right up there with the 'ridiculous' assertion that 'having a season ticket for over 20 years is NOT a show of loyalty.'
