2021 Cycling Thread

Just put my name down for a Giant Escape 2 with the disc brakes, picking it up next month. First time I’ll have been on a bike since school about 20 years ago so wish me luck! Can anyone recommend some extra thick padded pants??
I've got some dhb winter bib tights, they're pretty good.

Thanks Mate I’ll have a look. Even just trying the bike out in the shop felt like sitting on a brick. So starting out from scratch I reckon, a helmet, bell, lights, lock, tights. anything else for a complete beginner?

Maybe a new saddle, sometimes they're cheap stock saddles as people have a preference.

I don't have a bell, I ride on roads so no need.
Don't scrimp on lights. I've got some decent ones from planet x.
Do you plan on locking your bike up? I have a lock but rarely use it, I never carry it.

Saddle bag, tools, spare tubes, pump is important.
Good gloves too.

make Sure it is fitted properly. The site height makes all the difference for the ride comfort and your bum.

Thanks for the advice! That Planet X seems decent, is that where you’d get most of your stuff from or is there anywhere else you’d recommend? Definitely need a bike lock so will be looking for something gold rated. Good thinking about the gloves as well, hadn’t thought about that!

Council are having a consultation on installing better cycling infrastructure on the seafront between the old tram stop and the Bungalow Cafe.

Link to plans and council bunf.

Be slow going in a car, replacing the zebra crossing at Roker Park with pedestrian controlled traffic lights plus 5 new zebra crossings.

I've got rivelo bib shorts, ordered from sports pursuit. They're canny too. I've also got club shorts and tops. People seem to like rapha and le col gear, they're for rich cycling bell ends though.

Rapha too common for me ;) as is Castelli...whole gangs of lads all in Castelli looks naff

Le Col shorts work well for me, as do Morvelo and Stolen Goat.

Best full winter bibs happen to be DHB and I've tried some very expensive ones. Looking slightly shredded at knee after latest "off"

Need some help / advice please.
My son wants to start cycling. Bored with gym (when it is open) and it appears i have volunteered to fund his new pursuit.
I know nowt about what is good, bad or indifferent.
He is after a gravel bike so can road or cycle track / path.
What would be recommendations for approx. 1000. Less would be nice as will have to fork out for lights, lock, clothing and helmet as well.
Thanks is advance.

Save yourself £30 and don’t bother with the lock.

If the brand image doesn't bother you then there is this https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/triban-rc-520-gravel-riding-bike/_/R-p-302303
Otherwise if you want to go less than £1000 you maybe want to look at second hand stuff.

Start fitness have some decent bike gear in the outlet on line, sometimes limited on sizes but got loads off there and not wasting a fortune if its not for you.

Bugger! I thought I had ordered a pair of 700x32c tyres. They turned up today and it seems I made a mistake and ordered 700x23c instead. Fuck, but it's a bastard when you start to go senile.

Sounds like dyslexia marra

fairly specific question I suppose, has anyone ridden a specialized bike with the future shock system? I’m trying to cut thru the marketing crap to figure if it does much for the ride?

I was just reading an article about how the pandemic has affected the bicycle industry where there was a sales boom last year & everyone is trying to get more stock to sell this year & how consequently suppliers are increasing prices. The UK distributor for Lightweight wheels commented that last year one of the shops they supply was selling five or six pairs of the Lightweight wheels that cost £8,000 per pair - every week! They said that in normal times that shop would expect to sell that many in a month anyway. Don't know where the shop was but fuck me, how many people would you expect to buy an 8-grand pair of wheels? Who is buying them? Will it be mainly genuine racers being funded by sponsors - surely they haven't multiplied four-fold because of the pandemic. Or will it be knobs with more money than sense? It f***ing certainly isn't me.

can you post the article?

im sniffing around a specialised diverge, have been since i was knocked off my bike this time last year... for the insurance quote the basic diverge jan20 was £900, by the time the insurance paid out in jun20 the basic diverge was £1000 but with no stock, and i think when i looked at christmas the entry level was either £1100 or £1200...
