**** 2019 Golf Thread ****

I had a very pleasant knock at St Annes Old links today. the weather was reasonably warm and there was no wind for a change. I nearly managed to birdie all of the par 5s but a fifteen footer on the last just missed the hole. Apart from a very wet November there has been some really good golfing weather so far this Winter.

Good golf that. Well played to you. :)

Has everyone started playing again?
My last 3 rounds in competitions (still off yellow tees) have been 38, 39, 39 and possibly have finished 3rd in the winter league.. I'm going to give it a go and try to get down to 4, it helps now that I've packed cricket in

Aye, played a few rounds, have been f***ing shite, although the last round managed 39 pts.

My aim this year is get to 20 or below handicap. Currently 23.

Oh aye, cheers whoever changed the title.

Never stopped playing although the weather during February was a bit poorer in this neck of the woods restricting the amount that I've played. The generally mild weather has been good for golf this Winter.

Yes, never stopped to be fair, weather is good here. Played one or two rounds a week with lost of range time though I've got shittier since I first moved here in October 2018.

Post scores in the low 80's, high 70's but I'd be lucky to break 95 as it stands, probably worse. I've developed a massive over the top swing, shanks, thins, big slices and 40/50 yards short on all clubs.

It's doing my head in but working through it now as I've finally found a drill (of the 8 I've tried ) that is working to fix it.

Our course Middlesbrough Municipal) has been open right through the winter apart from 2 days. Had 12 holes open for about 2 weeks and winter greens for 2 weeks. Fully open the rest of the time . Been able to keep up to a decent standard. Started the year at 20 and now at 17.5. The way Ive played over the winter makes me think I will be around 15/16 soon.

How much you reckon I should spend on a good putter? Part of my game I give no thought to, still got the same one I had when I was 17

Does it make much difference?

I recently went to get measured up for a new one. Was going to spend around £200.
Put me on the mirror mat to look at how aligned my eyes are compared to the perfect line and the ball and used a laser to look at my swing and how it moved compared to the weighting of the putter.
The pro came to the conclusion the putter I had was perfect for me but felt the fatter grips would benefit me as I occasionally turned the putter over slightly.

Cost me £20 for a new grip and I reckon im putting a lot better saving me around 3 or 4 shots a round. I still occasionally feel the over turn but with the fatter grip i see it as i turn and can stop myself and start again.

Worth sorting out as it's the most important club for me.

Good question, you use it more than a driver and people go out and spend a shed load on those and then complain when a putter comes close to driver prices. Its probably an area where most people could shave more stokes off too.

As @blf said, go to your local pro, see if they have a SAM PuttLab or Quintic putting machine and get fit. Could be as little as a loft change or a new type grip. Failing that and new shiny toy in your hands is sure to make you a better golfer ;)

Some new putter today have faceplates that help the ball from miss hits, Evnroll might be the best of the lot and have great reviews, not to expensive either. I'm looking myself and have my eye on a Ping Asner. I've tested them and I have great results and will probably pull the trigger in late spring.

I've got a mate with a limited edition $1000 Bettinardi putter  and its as numb as feck in feel when I've used it. The cheapest they make are $300. Scotty Cameron is the same, I've never thought much of them, and they feel way overpriced.

I managed one round the other week, played absolutely shite, but discovered a great course in the process. Forest Hills golf club in the forest of Dean, I don't know if anyone from down this way has played it, but it's a stunning course, all grass tees open even in February and overall in great condition. Worth a round for anyone in the area.

How much have you spent on your driver, unless you use it on fairways less than 18 times a round. If you can beat that with a putter you must be chipping in alot. See a specialist putting pro. Down here we have Shane Rose highly recommendable.

If it works don’t change it. Spend more time on the putting green practising 3 to 5 footers. Will save you a shed load of shots.
