1st TEST - England v Sri Lanka

I hope Sri Lanka are 9 down at the close of play so that England are embarrassed by their pathetic conservatism. Hopefully the reaction would act as a catalyst for making us more aggressive and ultimately more interesting to watch.
not with moores in charge. this is one of his best results

Tests like these will ensure that Test match cricket eventually moves to the margins.

With positive intent and bold and aggressive decision making, this game could have had a definitive result. Instead, an adult will be required to explain to their potentially interested kid that they have played for five days and still drawn. In the era of T20, such outcomes certainly turns people off the proper form of the game.

I'm fully prepared for the potential humble pie dosage if England nick it at the end.

england are so petrified of losing, that i think this will be the sort of summer we may have.

Someone ought to tell them that losing by playing positively will win them more plaudits than drawing negatively.

Just look at the England football team as another example of this.

But knowing that we should have set them a more chasable score giving our seamers more chances to take wickets.

Ballance got a ton though so lets all celebrate that.

Aye because we defiantly would of won if we put them in last night like.

we just got trounced 5-0 and have half a team of new players in. The reaction on here is absolutely ridiculous, typical football fan mentality, we had to get back to scoring big runs and we have done that, will get more confident in time

Certainly would have increased the chances. I have a feeling Sri Lanka are going to be 9 down at close of play. The criticism will be severe if that is the case

Cooks mentality will always be the same though so thats as much of an issue as getting our batting back to a good standard.

Absolute rubbish, a tight draw in test match cricket is actually sometimes one of the most exciting results. England in NZ with Prior's innings, Cardiff in the Ashes, Onions in South Africa

All brilliant tense games, you telling me they were all a waste of time because they were draws?

lbw 3 wickets left.

we have delayed declarations since the 80s. no surprise but the 20 overs wasted by both sides will be the difference

Nonsense and a bit of an insult to most of the cricketing pundits criticising England's approach in a similar fashion.

Winning games, getting the country back on side with positive cricket and being open is the way to grow confidence.

Look at the Australian renaissance as a perfect example. They certainly didnt recover from the doldrums with cautious batting and conservative declarations. They relaxed, attacked and got aggressive.

The pundits are not criticising the team like some on here. I know what you are saying about being aggressive, but I am more picking up on your point about test match being a waste of time if there is no result. Strongly disagree with this, some of the best matches in Test cricket are when teams are hanging on for draw on the 5th evening, so much riding on it and so much to lose.

Again, a fairly poor response. Context is important. Take into account opposition, conditions, game situations, series situations, etc etc. The games you have brought up above were all entirely different in context to this one.

Id compare this one more to the none declaration in the West Indies. We went on to lose that series. Conservative, timid and fearful cricket.

Well I found your last few posts very poor on the subject to be honest, guess that is sport, different opinions.

see above.

As an aside, we would not have lost this game had we declared with 30-40 runs less on the board. You can increase your chances of winning a game by given the opposition a chance of also winning the game.

Had England done it and lost I firmly believe the vast majority of pundits and posters on here would have praised England for having a go and sending a signal of intent.

You can also increase your chances of losing.

Especially on a dead pitch, with 2 utterly world class batsmen and no spinner

Praise for a signal of intent? Are you a spurs fan?

Hindsight is a wonderful thing...

Take these to Leeds and beat them and everyone will be happy man!!

Jesus, I've been positive for once!

HAWAY!!!
