1st TEST - England v Sri Lanka

Had a great day out at Lords today. I'm personally happy that Ballance got his Century, fully deserved after some of the poor efforts earlier in the day.

Didn't Middlesex chase down 470 odd for 3 at lords this season?

It's a batting wicket, against 2 of the best batsmen of all time, without a spinner

I'm all for declaring to set up a win, but we also don't want to lose after a horrific run in the winter
I take the point about Middlesex chasing down a massive score but there isn't the time to chase the score England have now. I've got no problem with letting Ballance getting his hundred but he should have been told at 5 that he's got an hour to do it, he and Jordan are to put there foot down with Plunkett still to come. That way we could have put them in tonight and still had them chasing 380 from 97/100 overs. He didn't have any problem accelerating when he was told he had to get there tonight. My biggest issue with today is that England let the game drift after tea, didn't show enough intent.

Can't disagree

Sentiment dictated we got Ballance his ton.

We declared on Hick 0nce in the 90s v the Aussies, should have declared today. We have a Test to win, not personal baubles to accumulate.

I take your point like, but never reference anything about the 9os as a good thing! bad bad times

Atherton admitted years later he made a huge mistake in doing so and it damaged his relationship with Hick

Agree - it wasn't often we got to declare especially against the Aussies so Atherton probably didn't have a clue what to do for the best!!

Fair comment

I have a horrible feeling we're going to come out and bat for a 450 lead this morning.

Looks like we're going to lose a hell of a lot of overs. Close to 20, I think. Both Bumble and Boycott made good points last night. Bumble thinks the captain should be suspended whilst Boycott insists that teams should be penalised.

Something has to be done about it, must have lost 1 1/2 or 2 hours play from this test match and that's with the extra half an hour every day. It could make the difference to the result today too.

Exactly. It's not on, the only way to stop this is suspending the captain or fining the team with loss of runs.

Agree. Losing money isn't making any difference so fining the captain a % of his fee is pointless. I'd like to see 3 strikes and you're out - fail to keep to 15 overs an hour in 3 games and you get suspended for 1. Do it again and you get suspended for 2 and so on....

That would be crazy - even Cook wouldn't do that! Surely.............

Losing runs is an interesting one, and whilst it should ensure the captain keeps up with the rate, it could artificially engineer results and detract from the simplicity that is Test Cricket

Spot on mate.

First time I've seen Plunkett bowl in a while and I'm sorry like, he just hasn't got it. The white Saj.

Chuckling to myself reading through this thread, whatever happens today, some of you are going to explode.

I'll explode with the fury of many suns if we have them 7/8/9 down at the end of play

Was a bizarre inclusion really. Arguably not even the best Yorkshire bowler this season.

He bowled an excellent spell of bouncers there, he needs to be used correctly, I still feel he has been told to bowl too many spells of line and length, get him bowling bouncers like he has done to that Silva.

I think I must be the only one who isn't impressed with Jordan, he has talent and he might prove me wrong today but as a red ball 1st change bowler I am yet to be convinced, not enough control and bowls too short. Anyone else agree?
