That's my thoughts, it's a big ask of someone who will only have faced a new ball infrequently. I don't mind it so much in ODI's as he can go through the gears so if he gets in he has the ability to push the score along and make a big score.

I would have had Ali there personally with bell at 4, ballance 5 and root at 6.

I wouldn't have been against Ali at 3 as he opens for his county, Bell should be in the top 4 now as the senior batsman in the side.

As impressive as it sounds, it's immaterial if he's only batted there a handful of times. He's a very good cricketer either way mind and deserves to be in the side.

True it likely isn't. But we have a opener/number 3 at 6 and a middle order batsmen at 3

Maybe the England set up are more convinced by Ballance at 3 than Ali given that he Ballance is more proven at a higher level than Ali?

The first point is likely but baffling when he's not a top order batsmen. The second point is irrelvant this is ballance's second test match and he only got 25 runs in that match.
