1993 Bennett testimonial

Anyone go ?

Scenes outside .

Was terrible.

I did. Most of them were so blitzed they didn't know what was going on, there was also a significant minority who were intent on violent disorder. Someone got pezzled to shit outside the Wheatsheaf and I mean badly beaten by a mob of Rangers fans. Not to mention the lad from Easington who got slashed.

Having said all that, I spoke to loads who were very drunk but friendly enough and I remember them singing there's only one Gary Bennett before the game.

I hadn’t realised how good Hately was until that night, he was amazing. I didn’t see any bother and we had a few drinks with some of their fans in the Demi after the match, they were regular football supporters happy to have a drink and talk about football

Me father was there.

He got there around 5pm and the windows were out at The Terminus at that time. Said he saw a Rangers fan stabbed with a syringe outside The Wheatsheaf. Also said that there were Chelsea fans present.

Roker Avenue a battlefield as the 2 sets of fans slugged it out.

Said that at one point he was in The Terminus and a Rangers fan came over and said that he had followed Rangers for years and had never seen bother like it. He asked how he got to Roker Park and my dad said - see those lads fighting down that street? Directly through them". At which point the Rangers fan went ashen faced.
Hmmmm.....

Was only about 14, don't remember seeing the bother, main memory was loads of mortal rangers fans, listening to their sectarian songs, drinking whisky straight for bottles. 1st time I'd seen people drinking like that!
Was in the back of the Fulwell, it seemed quite friendly inside the ground. Obviously outside was different!
Loved Benno, cool as fuck.

Similar to my experience. A few of us came down and parked near where Tescos is now. Not even sure we had time for a pint though. We walked around and clocked how busy it was with Rangers fans drinking everywhere but the atmosphere was quite friendly and we spoke to a few.

Rangers were decent, Hateley was really good and I'd never really seen him apart from for England as he'd left for Italy before I really got Into football and he hadn't really shone for England, so I was surprised. I recall being in the fulwell and there being a stench of stale alcohol coming from the clockstand where the Rangers fans were as you got closer to it and I think I also recall someone in that end in the clockstand padlock having a mag top on and parading in front of us - he or it was quickly removed though.

We heard rumours of bother in the town but we'd not seen anything so reading all the comments in the years gone by seems mad as it's completely different from our experience as even on the way out it seemed quite friendly.

We all took the day off work and put a minivan on to get us there for 12.
Drank all day with them and no bother at all.
However once we walked to RP they all seemed to change into horrible angry little fckers.
Had to check the date as could have sworn it was earlier than 1993
