1993 Bennett testimonial

We were in the Grange before and after. Heard about the bother but didn't see any ( or have forgotten).

You ever meet Chris Stewart marra -top journo and another mlf?
Be well retired now I would think
No, I haven’t! While I actually went and worked for Match magazine after qualifying and was a stringer for a couple of the tabloids doing match reports, I haven’t done much sport. Been mainly music, lifestyle and cars. All the good stuff really. I didn’t have the big b____ks to be a full-time sports reporter! Had fun when I did it though.

We were drinking in the Howard, plenty pissed high spirited friendly Rangers inside, stepped outside just as about 300 Rangers fans crossed over the road singing 'we're the famous icf'. Cue absolute pandemonium. Never seen as much trouble even v mags.

I seem to rememebr them unfurling a huge 'King Billy' flag in the Clock stand. Took up nearly the full lenght of the clock stand. Never seen naything like that before.

I.m sure there was a coach load of Rangers went to dog track in afternoon as was a meeting on, apparently an old bloke died from the coach , they left him at the dog track then picked him up after match and took him back to Glasgow/Scotland

I remember Rangers were allocated the whole of the Roker End and the Clock Stand and that their fans were very loud, waving Union Jacks and singing 'God save the Queen' and 'Rule Britannia'. I thought at the time that it was a bad idea to have given them so many tickets but as they would probably have travelled down anyway without, in hindsight it was probably the best thing to do. Interestingly the crowd that evening was 21,862 which was bigger than any of our league gates that season in which we averaged 16,934 and was only bettered by cup games against Aston Villa (23,692) and Carlisle (23,587).

I was there and didn't see any trouble at all. Just remember it was a really good atmosphere. Was a bit shocked to hear about the bother once I'd got home.
