1993 Bennett testimonial

I was there, every corner you turned somebody was on the street covered in blood, buses going past with there windows put out, I also had my car radio nicked. Went to report it, the queue was out the door at the police station.

Remember scraping behind the roker pie shop with this little mad jock who wouldn’t stop down about a one hour later I saw him sparked out outside the Fulwell. I woke up the next morning with smashing black eye . A couple of lads from our way were stabbed in a bar in the town cowardly pricks
Digby’s?

I thought it was 2 brothers from Castletown way that got slashed in digbys
To be honest I think they may of been more than one incident of slashing mate,I def no that a lad got slashed in the town in digbys on the stairs and he’s from Easington.

Digby's was clearly one of the pubs where the slashings took place, but I always thought that the same happened in The Blandford (but my memory is somewhat goosed these days!).

At the time I was doing my NVQ in Journalism in south London and managed to get a fortnight’s work experience on the sports desk at the Ronnie Gill.

It had a brilliant two weeks, working mainly in the office with the sports editor at the time – sadly I can’t recall his full name, I think it was Andy, but I recall him being a Liverpool fan from Southport and he was a top fella. But I shadowed Jeff Brown for Durham cricket, who as we know is a MLF and a lovely man.

For football it was Paul Nunn, as he was the Chronicle’s SAFC correspondent. A rather taciturn man, who I think saw me as a bit of a hindrance, and who sadly died at a very young age a few years back.

We spent the day at Roker Park for the Rangers game, and I did a couple of interviews which at the time was exciting and also frightening.

I could tell the atmosphere around the match was rather charged, however, and after the game we were held back from exiting RP as it was kicking off everywhere.

I just recall lots of members of Benno’s family being there, up from Moss Side, who basically stated that the trouble was a tea party compared to what life was like back in Manchester. They were right.
You ever meet Chris Stewart marra -top journo and another mlf?
Be well retired now I would think

I was there - was walking to the Fulwell in a black Adidas top which had a green logo. One fan told me too much F***ing green on that top - I quickly hurried into the Fulwell after that!!

Was talking to a few in the Blue Bell and this lad was ranting on for ages about the Catholics and how awful they were, he went to the bog and his mate who had had to endure these rants on regular occasions I'd imagine said you'd never have guessed he's married to one! We fell about laughing and just shows how pathetic it all is.
Lots of union Jacks about and the Queen had never been so popular on Wearside as on that night.

Double Maxim pub on High Street???
Aye, an error on my part, I’ve been in Yorkshire 30+ years. The pub was below street level on High St West , Le Metro or something like that. Double Maxim was the new name for the North Moor pub off Durham Rd. Put it down to auld age.

I was there. A lad I worked with at the time (SAFC/Celtic fan) in a drunken moment tried to set fire to a Red Hand of Ulster flag. Can't remember the game too clearly, but huge amounts of Rangers fans (mostly pissed) around.

Singing GSTQ while giving nazi salutes
Bunch of charmers ,will never watch them again live or their mates in the hoops
That's not football at all

They snatched money from the tills in the New Derby..distracted the barmaids for a second and grabbed the money..i was on night shift at AMEC Offshore on the Tyne..i got dropped off on Newcastle Road about 3 in the morning..it was deathly quiet then suddenly i could hear something coming from the direction of the town centre..i stood and listened and it was Rangers fans singing in the town centre.

Wasn’t allowed to go. Was 9, me dad was probably working away. Had a season ticket but this was one of a handful of games I missed at Roker Park from Aug 92 until it closed.

He probably made the right call like.
