I went with two lads same age as me(around 20) unfortunately both are dead now. Just to depress you more I've been to Wembley four times and seen us get beat all four!
it was crap. i was on a coach next to the window and got a right soaking off condensation.
this affected my prawn sandwiches and battneburg
i even stood with the rabble![]()
Painted my hair red & white.... Set off early with Donnie supporters club.
Was certain we were going to win...realised when Walker missed the penalty it wasn't going to happen.... in tears at the end then feeling very proud as our fans upped the volume in defiance just as norwich collected the trophy - but then applauded Them on their lap of honour.
Sat in Wembley car park for hours.. Their fans held up signs saying 'hard luck, lads'. That sort of stuff was unheard of in the mid 80's.
As a kid I'd always said I'd never go Wembley unless Sunderland played there so it was my first visit. We managed to repeat that same disappointing experience again on my next two visits as well.
Were you there , 28 years ago today bet there some good story's knocking about

We went down on the Saturday with a bus from Sacriston, enough said, and stopped off at Leicester on the way down. They were playing West Ham and we found a club not far from the motorway, stayed there for a couple of hours and had a bit craic on with the WHU lads. From memory there were plenty of illegal substances smoked that day.
On the way from Leicester to London the bus broke down so they had to call for another. However the lads decided to walk down the hard shoulder and we were all picked up by an empty bus making its way down to the smoke. It took us to the Service Station at Mill Hill, North London where we were staying.
We went into London on the night.
At some point during the night we decided to make our way back to The Edgware Road from where we could get a taxi to Mill Hill and this was when the fun started.
Not far from Tottenham Court Road we were involved in a fight and a lad from somewhere like Ferryhill got stabbed in the neck. Missed his main artery by millimetres.
When we got back to Edgware Road we bumped into a load Chelsea fans and another scuffle broke out. This one ended up with one of the lads we were with getting arrested, one of only about 8 that weekend IIRC. The lad was a postman from Framwellgate Moor. Cracking lad.
When we got back to Mill Hill the Police were there. some of the lads had beaten us back and one of them had fallen through the glass coffee table, absolutely arseholed so the hotel had called the Feds.
One of our lot had lost his room key so he had to sleep in the bath in our room.
Cant remember much about the actual day TBH, probably arseholed, but separate to us some of our mates had stopped at Luton the night before and one of them had been arrested for non payment of a taxi fare IIRC. Another one spent the match in one of the police holding cells in Wembley Stadium.
I think we saw the only fight related to the match when a Norwich fan got clouted off an SAFC fan at Stanmore Tube Station after the game.
Madness.
was going down to London in the car on the sunday morning. Was on the radio that there had been a night of disorder in the West End and numerous Sunderland supporters were being held. You may well have been part of that by the sound of it

You must have had a canny kip, that was a few weeks later I think
" Thank you very much for the Milk Cup Sundland, thank you very much, thank you very, very very much" sang at us:-(
Cried me eyes out.
Looking up at the scoreboard in and seeing us 1-0 down-gutted.
My brother hates david Corner to this day and still goes on about him trying to shield the ball out.
Gilly (RIP) pissed out of his skull as per usual:-D

I was there. Went on the bus. It broke down at the bottom of the m1. All I remember was loads of coaches pulling over to give us lifts. After the match wandered around the coach park looking for a lift. Got dropped off on the a1 at Durham and walked the 2 miles home. Knocked on the front door as had no key. Mam went mental. "Wheres your Dad?" Last time i saw him was at wembley. I was 13.
