15 minutes cities for the north east?

Conceptually sounds a good idea for the environment. Everything you need within 15minute of your home. Decentralisation reducing mass commuting, opening up opportunities across an area. Less pollution etc.
I think it would work well for the north east with roads already congested unable to cope with traffic levels…..

Nice idea in theory but I don't think you can have it side by side with capitalism. The reason everything is centralised is profit.
And I'm not sure the weather is taken into consideration when assuming that people are going to walk and cycle everywhere.

It would be interesting watching OAPs cycling around Sunderland. 👍

Fair point and i've not heard that mentioned when talking about this. It's alright ambling around in the warmer climes of Europe in the nice weather but not when it's blowing a hoolie and pissing down so much.

I might be misunderstanding this, but how would this work on a match day, what with all those people coming in from outlying districts? are they going to be paying a charge?

It's impossible in the North East as most people live in low density housing so imo it sounds horrid as the only way it would work is by moving most people into apartments without a garden and the trade off 100% isn't worth it.

Well or you'd have a supermarket for every 300 people and a school for every 50 pupils which is unsustainable.

Funny, Peterlee was built with this same concept. Small self-contained areas. Each "borough" has its own mini shopping complex, school etc. With a central "town centre" hub in the middle.

Whether it worked or not is another matter.

Well is Jim’s Fresh Fields, Monte Carlo fish bar and carbitz still open?

Carbitz renamed itself (Peterlee Car Care?) and moved up to the industrial estate opposite NSK.
The homecare, chippy and offie-shop are still there. Plus a couple of others that I can't recall.

Jim’s Fresh Fields isn’t there now surely?

Wouldn't say Peterlee is this concept mind. It's built with cars in mind from the start hence the array of roads everywhere and most houses with drives. Not to mention there's no jobs anywhere and no real leisure in the whole town (nearest being Dalton Park cinema).

It's as car centric as you can get.

Some interesting stuff going on in Japan like this with new towns being built. Mainly with old folk in mind.

I’ve got a bridge for sale if you’re interested?

even better to see them bombing around on those blue electric scooters
Aye, you can picture them cutting through the driving sleet and snow, straight up the Bunny hill or Strawberry bank, rushing home to spend their pension.

perhaps washington was closer to the model? although that was 100% designed with the car in mind... in theory though, everything could kind of be within 15mins if you live in washington?

.
great example of the benefits of the politics sub, this is largely an adult conversation.

Aye it kinda does, kinda doesn't. Washington, Peterlee and Cramlington are probably the best examples of places you can drive everywhere in 15 minutes. You could probably easily convert them but you'd need to fix the public transport problem as it's pretty dire at all 3 so you can get about to the likes of Sunderland or Newcastle etc but when everyone is in their car then there's the problem.

They're also the problem places for the likes of Newcastle who seem intent on banning all cars but totally miss the point that a cycle lane is no use for Cramlington and Washington and the buses involve changes, are expensive and are slow and there's no alternative and I can't see the Washington outskirts Metro changing much either as it's too far out the way.

City planning is a mess up here imo.
