I was at that game in the cage at the back of the fulwell. What everyone fails to mention is that everyone in that picture was looking up at an raf chinook helicopter as part of s pre match display.

Don’t get me wrong it’s a great image but was nothing to do with any football action.....

Me anarl. When it was demolished I'd try my best to avoid the area.
I'd love to go back for one more game, think it would have to be a night time game under the floodlights. Although the place used to look class in August or last few games of the season, when the sun was shining and the turf was nice and green

It's about more than the footy though, it's the link to the past and not just our successes but also our parents/grand parents.

My grandad died in 72 but he told me how he used to stand in the Fulwell with his brothers, like I did with mine. That really connected the generations, lucky bastard got to see some championship winning seasons as well:lol:

Spot on marra, I was driving down there a few weeks ago and got me thinking about when I was a bairn walking down the street past the Cambridge pub then past the Roker pie shop and on to queuing up to get into the Roker end even that just seemed special. I hope young kids today feel the same way about the SOL as us older lads do about Roker park...

Brilliant this, thanks for posting.

Although I've seen that picture many times, I had no idea of how iconic it was beyond Sunderland fans

I loved Roker Park. The concrete steps in the Roker End, then seeing the pitch which was always a scintillating colour of green. The ground had its wonderful unique atmosphere which the SoL cannot replicate, no matter how much I like it.

That can't be true. We were never there that early. I can't remember a helicopter display.

I do wish I had been around to see the Lads at Roker Park, like.
You’ll get to an age where you wish you weren’t eventually kidder.
