So he was wise and compos mentis
enough to know she was getting injected with a date rape drug but wasn't wise enough to raise this with the authorities instead his first thought was to try and slip them a couple of quid?

His first thought was to have a bit scrap with them.
 
Apparently not according to the Guardian report.


Under Greece’s penal code, Maguire could face a three-year sentence if convicted but likely to be spared as a result of a scheme that allows defendants to convert their sentences into “paid” penalties.
So he tried to bribe an official not to charge him, but now he’s been found guilty he can make a payment to avoid a harsher penalty.
 
Pretty sure this is common place in Europe.

I think a few very high profile players in Spain all got done for tax avoidance but simply paid a fine rather than went to jail.

Less than 2 year sentence and it's suspended in Spain I think. Not sure it's got anything to do with being rich enough to pay to keep yourself out, which seems to be this Greek model.
