On what basis?
Just conflicting reports, and a general cynicism with him being an English footballer.

On what basis?
It's worded in a way someone foreign would say what they heard him say.Isn't worded in a way which you'd say it imo
Me too. Just coming up with expected defences, language barrier etc and saying he didn't know they were police. Despite them saying fuck the police.Surprised at some of the responses here, thought it would be the other way. I can 100% see him having tried to pay his way out of it.
Bang on.One policeman alleged that while at the police station, Maguire said: "Do you know who I am? I am the captain of Manchester United, I am very rich, I can give you money, I can pay you, please let us go."
His colleague added that Maguire had said to him: "Please, let me go, I am very rich, I can pay, I am the leader of Manchester United."
The trial continues.
Hmmmm, something doesn't sit right there. I reckon the coppers might be the kind to tip yoghurt on themselves and say someone else did it. This yoghurt reference is nothing to do with being Greek.
They're coppers mate. They're all as bent as a 9 Bob note! One policeman alleged that while at the police station, Maguire said: "Do you know who I am? I am the captain of Manchester United, I am very rich, I can give you money, I can pay you, please let us go."

Are you really suggesting the UK should do away with human rights? My view -
1) Greece is dodgy when you hit any bother
2) Greek police are really dodgy
3) Maguire is probably not 100% guilty or 100% innocent, but any law doesn't give a middle ground
4) Why is the UK shafted by all this human rights shite. Greece is in Europe, whole case done and dusted in under a week, Maguire's expensive lawyers told where to go with every "hang on a minute" request. We should do the same, when you see the vermin on Police Interceptors get away with everything but murder, I think we should learn a lesson
Could be interesting if (when) HMG make a horlicks of brexit and we’ve got to get Schengen visa’s.Might he be banned from playing in / entering some countries due to the guilty verdict? I know some countries can be strict about letting anyone in with certain convictions.
I hope England don't have to play Albania away with all those guys with sharp straws.
Watch man utd get drawn v a Greek team in Europe nex next season
He will get a prison term that he can pay off at €xxx per day, isn't that the old Greek fund raising scam they've had for tourists who step out of line..
He was in Greece and subject to Greek law, if it happened in France he would have been subject to their law, thats how it works.Aye same mate. Imagine a lot of it is exaggerated but worrying how quickly he got locked up and how difficult it was to get out or in contact with anyone.
Let's be honest, he most likely didn't say that.
At the very least he must be banned from Greece for a few years post December, I would think it is possible if he is banned from there then the rest of the Schengen area is a possibility!Could be interesting if (when) HMG make a horlicks of brexit and we’ve got to get Schengen visa’s.
I read that he is represented in Greece by a top lawyer, he was tried under Greek law, believe he is appealing. At the very least he must be banned from Greece for a few years post December, I would think it is possible if he is banned from there then the rest of the Schengen area is a possibility!
Canada and Japan are well known for being strict (maybe too strict) when it comes to past convictions, even the US can put 10 year travel bans on people for minor crimes committed when you are there.
Most people can just travel under the radar hoping they don't get flagged up but he is too high profile for that.
I'm sure if he can afford 60K bottles of plonk then he'll be able to have the best legal advice to get around any issues.
He has been found guilty under Greek Law, that is how it will stay and all that matters unless his appeal is succesful. Yours and my opinions don’t count for anything. He should know better than to be out on the town drinking, serves him right.Bang on.
Guarding the 60K bottle of plonk. If he is so high profile what were his minders doing?
Guarding the 60K bottle of plonk.
Should never have been in a position to get involved in any scuffles. Its not difficult to enjoy a drink and stay out of trouble. The truth to it is probably what both parties are saying just in different contexts.
Greece used plain clothes police officers and supposedly Maguire's party had no idea who they were or why they were man handling them.
Maguire's take - I got pulled and pushed by random men in normal clothing and was defending myself as I thought they were attacking me
Police's take - I'm an undercover police officer trying to get hold of someone who is causing a bother and that person is resisting arrest and fighting against me.
Both of those things would be true,.Maguire is doing what any normal person would do and the police officer would feel like the person is breaking laws by acting the way they were.
That's the top and bottom of it, has a job and lifestyle most can only dream of and all he has to do is keep his nose clean.![]()
