“Be like Captain Tom”

Absolutely no slight on the man or what he achieved at all. Clearly a top bloke

But what frustrates me is that we shouldn’t need this kind of thing to raise money for the NHS, that’s why we pay tax. It’s just a shame that it’s diverted into Tory donors’ pockets.
Brilliant post.

Would be wasted on many in this country.

I’d be interested if you get much take up. We’re not (I’m at a medical research charity now) - we just decided that people will probably want to go with his foundation/NHSCT rather than us.

As we have other things to be pushing I'm not sure this is going to yield anything but you never know.
I think it could be a case of seen to be being involved. I'll find out more today probably.

he never raised money for the NHS. He raised it for the NHS charities (as was reported). IIRC this was to do things for the NHS employees. One such thing was to make a safe room for staff. somewhere they could go and shut out the covid noise.
£38.9 million is a lot of money though and I dont have a clue on what other projects it helped

To be fair, that sounds like exactly the sort of thing the NHS should use it’s own funds for.

The money was also used for paying staffs parking charges. Again that should be covered by the NHS rather than a charity.

Can you say a little more about what that is and how it works?

I can and I will.
For example, say you have a child who dies of cancer (best not to think about it but just as an example), rather than setting up a new charity to fund research into the cancer they died from, you could instead go to an existing childhood cancer research charity and say "I'd like to raise funds for childhood cancer research" which could cover all bases of it. Or you could say "I'd like to fund research into this specific cancer" - That may be tricky depending on whether said charity is looking into that particular strain at that point. However, it could ringfence the funding until someone began researching into cures/treatments etc.
The idea being that a charity like that would already be set up and have everything (virtually) they would need to conduct research into childhood cancers/specific cancer.

Another example could be that if your relative died and received hospice care before their death, rather than setting up "Doris McCracken's Fund" for palliative care for people who live in Washington, you could instead set up a tribute fund to the hospice which provided care for them. You could say that you'd like the funds to be spent on or around the Washington area or something that would benefit people from Washington, but others may benefit from it to. Say you funded a Community Specialist Nurse who covered Washington and surrounding area, you wouldn't pull funding if she went outside of Washington. There has to be some give/take on it.

Again, people like to fund "things" rather than people. So for example, you could set up a tribute fund to fund a new piece of equipment or pieces of equipment.
It's up to you how long you want to fundraise for too obviously, but it would be easier for you to set up a tribute fund to a hospice in order to buy a new riser recliner chair or whatnot than you try and set it all up yourself just to buy that.

There are loads of people out there who want to help and have good ideas, but I think they need steering in the right direction in order to maximise their potential and best outcomes for everyone.
I wasnt impressed with him walking around the house. If he wasnt a ww2 vet no one would care.

This is the thing. Does bring back our rather troubling obsession with the war in this country. Taking absolutely nothing away from him and his efforts mind you but in terms of coverage, there was an extremely elderly muslim chap who did a similar challenge inspired by Captain Tom but did it during Ramadan so he must have been knackered.
Some coverage, but nowhere near as much.

It’s not scoring political points honestly, it’s existed for years and years regardless of party. It grates a bit more now with the proliferation of billions to their mates, but the actual point is that charity shouldn’t be necessary with a welfare state.

Where is the benefit in an old man walking round a garden? He didn’t magic money up that wasn’t already there. If that’s how we fund things, we have a problem as human beings
If people tried taking personal responsibility for their own health the NHS would do just fine....carry on UK, drinkng, smoking and eating 'cos there's more Tom's out there to make up the £15 billion a year that the tax payer forks out to keep you in your shit, selfish lifestyle.

Some interesting points. I'm always surprised by the number of armed forces charities (or so it seems) and, as you say, what they're doing differently, especially when you still read things about the lack of support for members or ex-members of the armed forces.

There are a lot, many are small and specialized and offer other types of support as much as financial assistance. The one's that I have supported over the years; Blind Veterans UK, SSAFA and Combat Stress are less well known than for example; Help for Heroes or the RBL . There are of course now lots of very elderly former WW2 veterans to support as well as an entire generation of National Servicemen.

There are of course many organizations for service personnel which although not established for charitable purposes do provide charity support. Regimental Associations help former Members, and their families, in a variety of ways.

The Royal Hospital Chelsea, home to the "Chelsea Pensioners" is a registered charity.

This times a thousand. Millions skimmed off the top by the big players, donate local and small.

There’s a scale effect with the bigger ones though.

Ok, you could do a lot of good helping a local cause which helps a child afford life changing treatment.

You could also donate to fund research which will find the life changing treatment for another rare disease, or make the existing treatment cheaper.

Definitely unhelpful to make people think they’re funding some corporate machine, when in reality to find good people to run these large organisations you do actually need to pay them accordingly.

totally disagree

does not matter who you work for, there is always limitations on funds. we cannot expect there to be limitless funds.

Wonder how many paid jobs and state honours (for family) will emerge from the “captain sir lord his majesty tom Moore foundation” over the next decade.
Pathetic mealy mouthed comments about a dead man who raised money for charity. This following on from your comments about Hartlepool people being uneducated morons.
What's noticeable on here is those who bang the drum for how left wing they are, are the most unpleasant and bitter people you could ever know. Thread after thread you read their shite while all the time they keep up the pretence of their socialist credentials. Sad doesn't cover it.

Whilst I don’t mean this to Haway, I have noticed in the past that those who are left wing like to tell you they are and you’re right in that they do seem very bitter and unpleasant. Very strange.

With the Right having held sway in this country for over a decade, perhaps there's plenty to be bitter about.

Typical thicko response. Takes a mildly sarcastic comment referring to the societal one-upmanship that occurred with every z list celeb clamouring to be his mate as a slight on the dead 🙄.

So untrue.

The right get angry at the prospect of a refugee getting fed and the poor getting looked after. They despite any minority because they feel resentful that they have personally failed so blame the vulnerable to justify their meagre lives. As per the Hartlepool thread yesterday. Can you get any more bitter?

Firstly charity begins at home and looking after your own families basic needs . I often donate to Charity Shops. I've handed out sleeping bags and warm coats to those sleeping rough many time with my daughter who's a Social Worker with Teens and younger adults up to 25... Always very polite. Like others may have mentioned in a fairer society there should be no need for hand outs.. Especialy when the top the top ten % on the rich list have more cash than the other 90 %
