Got told that because of CSI, interest in forensic courses went up something like 600% and had 15,000 applicants every year since it was screened on channel 5. Apparently there are only 19,000 forensic scientist vacancies in the whole of the UK.

Any course without the right amount of research has the potential to be pointless regardless of the letters before your degree.

posts probably, not vacancies ;)

else I might start dusting for fingerprints myself

If Teeside wants to join London Southbank in its suicide pact then so be it.

It's an institutional choice as to whether a subject is a BA or BSc......the subject matter can be exactly the same.

So are you suggesting that there are examples of institutions giving BScs for degrees in, say, history or creative events management?

I was offered a place on a masters in law which was a Bsc...so where does that fit in?

They'd have to pay me that much to study there :)

I've worked with a number of former Teesside students who were awarded firsts in computing at Teesside and they're nothing special. One run-of-the-mill lass (ability-wise) completed her degree (yet another first) in computing as a mature student, did a year in industry and then went back as a lecturer.

I went to [what I snobbishly consider to be] a far better university and only two lads got firsts out of my year; they were both incredibly bright and very hard-working.

Whilst this is in no way a reflection of the standard of the course, I do think it reflects on the value of the qualification; worth £25,000+?

Good points mate

I know for a fact Sheffield Uni take away half marks in multiple choice sections of their exams for incorrect answers which isnt the case in some of the Polys. If you go to a Poly and get a first great but I think a 2:1 from a red brick is far more respected than say a first at a Poly

And that's average...not Teesside

And what do you base your statement on??

I'm currently a mature student at Teesside and the facilities are brilliant. Even getting lectures and training from our very own Steve Smelt, who was the originator of the course Im doing. Only a few select Uni's do it.

Show me some figures then... what do Teesside graduates earn?

Who said anything about earnings? Ok then for starters of the top of my head two well known people who studied at Teesside David Binningsley (SAFC Physio) and Rob Smedley (Ferrari Engineer).

I was wanting to know what you based your theory on that Teesside was shite?

You quoted the wrong post then.

And you'll struggle to find where I said Teesside Uni was shite. Just that they'd have to pay me that much to go now....

And guess what....?

Not really. Just that it's not £500 worse than Oxford

The Uni itself only wanted to charge £5k for courses but the student board didn't want the degrees etc undervalued by other institutions charging £9k so something comparable was agreed. Not good for any establishment to charge that much but once one of them said it was all followed suit.

I think thats pretty obvious tbh. When I graduated there were lecturers being made redundant and cuts being made to facilities and this was 4 years ago.

The expected fall in demand of these polys will see a few closing. Probably a good thing really those who go just to fuck about might think twice of they are getting in 36,000 quids worth of debt for the trouble.

So why not accept they can't compete and charge the £5k - such a short term policy it's plain daft - at least places like Sunderland can compete on key courses like Pharmacy , I'm not aware of Teeside having an exemplary reputation in a particular line of study but I'd welcome being proved wrong
