Wouldn't have thought it would be dark enough, that sounds promising temperature wise cause the cold is bad for her.

The auroral oval is centred on the north magnetic pole, not the geographical pole so the further west you go the less far north you need to go to be within the auroral oval. Iceland is outside the arctic circle and gets proper night from late August onwards. The aurora are so powerful up there you will see them against a twilight sky anyway.

The travel companies are making a grand per person a night on dog sledding toss, they don't want you to know this.

We are planning a trip to Iceland, but the Wife has to come with me! It has its complications as she drives and is disabled and can only drive automatics and I cant drive (yet) The other problem is the cold is really bad for her but she really wants to see the Aurora.

Bloody hell mate, you're leaving it late aren't you

If it was me, I would be tempted to spend it on travel - so I could take interesting photos.

Nailed on.

I had a discussion with my mate at Kielder star camp a few years ago and he said "The best money you can spend on astronomy is air tickets". In hindsight (and after spending upwards of 5 grand on kit) he was spot on! After a few years imaging the same old deep sky targets I reached the point where I needed to spend exponential amounts of money for incremental improvements and my interest in that brand of specialist, deep sky imaging took a nose dive. I didn't spent a penny on kit last year and put it all into our Iceland trip, resulting in a great holiday with some nice aurora shots. The best shots I have taken in the last two years have all been as a result of being in the right place at the right time.
