I love stories like this (shame its from the Mail);

60 rare and classic cars have been in a French barn for years as the owners did not realise they were valuable!

I was on holiday in Scotland two years ago and the field to the back of the cottage we were renting was full of old cars. I had a walk around one evening and was astonished at what was there.

There were also really old Lancasters and Rovers;

There were quite a few VW camper vans too, but all rotten.

I also heard a rumor years ago about a Mk11 Escort Mex or RS2000 in a barn up near Stonygate on the A690??

Recently I was told of a number of old Bentleys that were stored in a disused warehouse near Seaham.

From what I heard, your Escort rumour may well have a ring of truth.

Unless there was the odd bomber, I think you meant Lanchesters in your op.

Very interesting marque that.

Some find that mind but how can the owners have no clue about their potential value? Ffs even the most car unaware person must know a Ferrari or Maserati would be worth a few Bob?

My uncle has just done up a Mark 2 escort Mexico. Some Scottish fella was selling it for about £2k on eBay so he flew straight up to get it. Sold it for £18k about 6 month later. It was class when he did it up.

Fully agree with this, I was sceptical but they must have had some sort of logic why they hadn't cashed in earlier. Even if it was just a few of them at a time?

There is loads on his Facebook. I'll have a look now.

My dad had a 1.6 Ghia. I learned to drive in it.

Lovely Escort there mate, they do gan for an absolute fortune these days like!

You are indeed correct. Lovely looking car, shame it's been left to rot in a field.

Many years ago one of my school mate's dad had an immaculate pea green 1950's Lanchester.

Smashing looking car. It would be worth a fortune now.

From memory it was this model but I'm sure it was a darker green.

One of the founders, Frederick Lanchester was a really interesting bloke.

Engineer, inventor and polymath he patented a remarkable number of very clever inventions, including the counter rotating shaft idea which provides vibration damping in automotive engines. Decades later Mitsubishi used and may still use, an almost identical principle on some of their engines.

Unfortunately he appears to have been more of an engineer than businessman and Lanchester, after changing hands a few times, eventually ceased production in 1955, just a few years after the death of the founder.
