£1.5m for kevin davies

That's a pretty binary analysis. Bolton are beneath us in the league but we have a system and Davies would fit into it therefore his potential value to us cannot be gauged by looking at whether Bolton are currently picking him or not.

I'm unsure how an ageing has been who can't run would fit into our system? Our system at the moment from what I've seen is based on soaking up pressure (lots of men, sometimes all behind the ball), quick passing and counter-attacking football.

The lad has no pace.

I'd be quite happy with him to be honest.

Though my bolton supporting cousin says "for £1.5 million il'l drive him up there myself"

Different positions anyway, so not sure whether him signing would impact on their willingness to let Barrios go. They may want to make up funds for the outgoings on him anyway.

Maybe but he's only started 3 league games all season. They've been using him as a sub and I imagine he'll want to be away to play first team football.

He needs to stay on the shoulder of the last man. When we break he needs to win it, keep it and make a pass. That's all. No pace required for that.

Does that not tell you something if someone who watches him on a regular basis says he would drive him up here himself? For a mere £1.5m.

I am judging it on the fact at how important he has been for them over the years, now he can not get into the team. He is not as good as the 2009-10 season.

Agreed.

Oh aye, but Dortmund are pushing for the title. They'll not want to weaken their squad. I'm sure they'd be happy to have him as backup until the summer.

But as I mentioned our style of play often means all of our players are behind the ball (including Bendtner). Davies wouldn't be able to get forward quick enough. He's not particularly great on the deck and it also needs noting that the Bolton fans don't think he's very accurate in the air judging by their comments. They were calling him 50 pence head

Yeah good point. The player and his agent might be forcing their hand though.

I agree but what teams around us have sold two players for a fee in the region of £30-40m? Yes it's not paid up front but we will receive the money over a period of time.

Again, though, I ask... we spend that on players, how do you suggest we reign in the annual losses that we can no longer post? Football is all about the long-game now in the FFP era. That's the one we have to play.

You could argue Gardner is doing the same. I doubt we'd let him go unless we get a replacement or big money. Same could be said for Barrios I'm afraid. We shall see.

financial fair play is a myth to be honest, its complete bollocks, and will never be enforced.

as has been pointed out, it would mean all the big boys are not allowed to play in europe... will never happen

Wouldn't qualifying for Europe help address that situation? I suppose in answer to your question, we either have the finances to compete and realise our ambitions or we must concede that we will never be anything more than a mid-table side.

I'm not so sure it is. QPR are living well beyond their means offering the likes of Joey Barton £70/80k a week.

It may turn out to be a myth, I don't know. What I do know is that the authorities wouldn't think twice about making an example out of a club like Sunderland.

Until we know for sure how stringently it would be applied, we'd be very unwise to ignore it.

Genuinely worried if this is the level we are now shopping at.

Lose Jones, Bent, Gyan then Bendtner (when his loan ends) and plan to replace them with Kevin f***ing Davies?

Well I think we all know Davies would be short-term but you do raise another important point. Bendtner is leaving us in the summer therefore really you could argue that we need to replace him as well as bring in another striker as we are losing Gyan. Also if the Bolton fans are to be believed he is on his last legs so he will need replacing.

We'd be best off weathering the storm if O'Neill thinks Davies is the answer. A loan on the other hand would make sound sense.

To me, we either do it properly or not at all.

Not the Europa league. From UEFA's website:

It is anticipated that a minimum amount of €1m per club will be paid out for the group stage. A club could receive, at best, €6.44m from featuring in this season's competition

So if we got into Europe and won it, we could get just over £5m in prize money and may be the same again in matchday income after costs. Then there would likely be a players bonus scheme in operation linked to the competition. Plus, we are, at best, an outside bet to even qualify.

Granted the commercial benefits would be better should we become a fixture in the competition, but no reason to suggest that is likely to happen and it can't happen unless we start living within our means anyway.

So it is about ambition to a certain extent, but mainly about practicality. No reason we can't qualify for Europe on occasion, or even pretty regularly. But we can't just buy our way into it any more.

Be interesting to see what happens with QPR. Got all the hallmarks of another Portsmouth to me.

Spellcheck and punctuation. Come back when you've mastered both.

What a sad little man you must be (your name is fitting for your personality). Who the fuck cares about punctuation and spelling? Im writing a message on a forum using an iPhone! Im not writing a formal Business Letter or an Essay (BELLEND!)

Nice move going for a player who cant get a game for a relegation club!
