I never understand this "we need a player to hold the ball up" shite. We simply need a striker who can put the ball in the net, must every player we go after be able to hold the ball up? I'm unsure why it's such a special gift. Lots of good players can bring the ball down and lay it off.

Davies was good a few seasons ago, he's lost the plot now, will have no sell on fee and is hardly going to get the fans racing back.

It's not shite. The entire way we are set up to play under O'Neill (and in fact all O'Neill teams) is reliant on a player up top who can hold it up and bring others into play. His teams need a focal point. This is the main reason we weren't as impressive in posession against P'Boro or Swansea in my opinion.

So people are happy that we're bringing in a striker who doesn't score many goals?

There are too many old skool fans on here. They're wary when we're linked with foreign players but often made up when we're linked with average UK players. Davies has been an average player, he's not good to watch, will bring zero entertainment value to the side and is more intent on fouling than playing football.

Can see it working a treat in the short term tbh.[/QUOTE]

With Bendtner our for a while, and Wickham still not 100%, short term Davies makes sense. Can lead the line and give us a presence in the opposition's box. Not the long term solution, not a bad short term option.

Things change. I have not seen anything of the sort since O'Neill took over. Our passing has been good and quick, we haven't been resorting to the long ball. When O'Neill took over he said he wanted to adopt a style of play similar to Barcelona, he realised that's the ultimate goal and we're never going to play in the same way as we wouldn't have the players. But it was a high benchmark and Davies would not fit into that at all.

Should have started a new thread for this one (if you haven't already ;))

Already have but he's a class player, so the Kevin Davies talk is the more popular one...

I reckon Davies would do a canny short term job for us like, we have very little experience up front. Proved by Fraizer Campbell being our oldest striker.

I'll follow MON on this, not some pervy carpenter....

And oh how we laughed when them jokers up the road bought Shefki ! (Think positive thoughts, think positive thoughts....) In Martin we trust

f***ing hell.

Exactly this.

Just the sort O'Neill works wonders with then.

That's a definite it'll be his last big payday so he's going to want a big wage as well.

Like i said earlier there could well be an element of longer term planning here. Davies did his UEFA B coaching course back in 2009. He strikes me as the type to do well in coaching and perhaps our manager is killing two birds with one stone.

 He's not a magic man. If he was, Ji would be playing more games surely? I'd have rather seen us keep Noble and give him and Ji more experience than sign Davies. I honestly couldn't think of many players worse (at the moment in this league). And to think people were laughing at Heskey!!!

How can some people here consider £1.5M cheap for a 35 year old who at his peak was an average Premier League player? It's incredibly expensive. 500k would be reasonable.

He'll score a hat-trick against Newcastle and become a cult hero..... Nailed on.

Superr, Super Kev
Suuuper, Super Kev
Suuper, Super Kev
Super Kevin Davies!!!!

Aye, we sign Davies. They've got Ba and Cisse. At least those up the road have been spending the fees they've received.

We're still waiting for Bent's replacement and we got shot of Gyan.

I only hope if the Davies rumour is true, we're bringing in another striker as well.
