Yellow card for this?

This. It looks bad but the Swansea player nipped the ball away first.

Why’s that matter? if you do a tackle that high, aggressive and late anywhere on the pitch even if not during a set play it’s a straight red.

So if you are going to use the argument the other player thought it was a live ball you can’t have it both ways and it’s still a straight red

Well, its a dead ball situation as a starter. TBH, without watching the wider context of the game, who knows.

Defo a red that haha. What on earth has went through his head to do that. Very lucky to only get booked.

Probably thought 'ill make it look like an honest attempt to play the ball and the ref will fall for it and pussy out of the red'.

Good decision.

I agree but by the rules of the game you have 2 options.

It’s either an off the ball incident where he hasn’t thought the ball was live in which case it’s a definite red for violent conduct as he is only trying to kick the player.

Or he thinks the ball is live in which case he is still off for being late, aggressive and high. Again, do a tackle like that in the centre circle as a player runs past you it’s a red all day long.

So be it dead ball or in play is irrelevant. Kick someone like that under the letter of the rules and a red is the only outcome for violent conduct
Surely a yellow for interfering with a free kick

Id give the other player a yellow too probably but that doesn’t excuse the kick. Again in normal play if someone kicked the ball away and you booted them after it’s still a red.

Referees allow these situations to develop. Every game you see players committing time wasting and/unsporting behaviour that goes unpunished. So easy to enforce but they do nothing.

If the referees yellow carded every kicking the ball away this would not happen. The Swansea player was doing it because he thought he could and should for his team's benefit. At least he was booked this time. Might think twice next time.

it isn’t a tackle though? Watching the Luton player before he strikes, his eyes are on the ball and then the area he is looking to play it to. He has no intention to strike the player or, if he does, he has hidden it very well.

In a similar scenario anywhere else on the pitch the player is still off. You could try and clear a ball like that as a defender during play, if you end up hoofing the striker in the air like that as you go to clear the ball (Bearing in mind the Swansea lad gets their first) your still getting a straight red all day long. That’s if you assume the ball is live.

If the ball isn’t live he has just kicked out at a player

Even with the replay, find it hard to believe that wasn't deliberate, nearly tipped him on his head he hit him with that much force.

Booking for the lad in white seems completely justified. He clearly kicks the ball away (like a c*nt) as the Luton player is running up to take the free kick.

Assuming it was a Luton free-kick, the Swansea player should definitely have been booked.

Its a bit of naughty editing by SKY to remove the ball from most of the shots and to zoom right in so you can't see where the Luton player is kicking to. I'd like to see it from another angle, but if you look at the clip from 17 seconds, the Luton player appears to have his eyes on the ball, goes to make a long kick and then the Swansea player replaces the ball with his foot!

It is far from being as clear cut as the clip makes out.
