Very local stuff ,seeing very early Red alert play at the summer fair on the field which is now the bus station at the wheat sheaf
Then a few times with red London at dame dot community centre
My mate was the drummer .
Everybody was in a band with someone
Meanwhile what seemed like a different country the Bunker lads were in bands .Warsaw etc

I remember Dicker (one of many members) from The Toy Dolls used to own a pretty good guitar shop in town. It was called Sound World and used to be in Derwent Street and then moved to where Pop Recs is now next to The Bunker.
didn’t know Dicker was in The Toy Dolls.
i always went in his shop and had a natter with him ( remember it next door to durham book center ).canny bloke, wouldn’t shut up when he started

Red Alert were really good back then..i saw them down the community centre and down Monkey House School a few times..as I've already posted I saw them at Independent the other week and they were tremendous.

What a fantastic time to be alive, I remember seeing loads of punk bands in sunderland back then, the polytechnic (wearmouth hall) had some good punk bands on, I seem to remember seeing sham 69 there, the Vibrators and the Jam at the seaburn hall (blood and snots all ower) the stranglers at the mayfair (Mecca) did’nt bother with the boomtown rats at the empire though too pop for me.

A mate sent me this only a few weeks ago

Said he could see me in the audience.

My dad is Mr Scott the original drummer of The Toy Dolls when they formed around 1979

Could tell you countless of stories hes told me about what they used to get up to and also ones about Baz Warne (Stranglers) as he and my dad were in bands together and best mates for years before his stranglers days
Found this pic of me dad, Olga and Flip in the very early days of the Dolls

Peterlee's finest Uproar have been back doing the rounds again the past year or so.
I think every bus stop in peterlee had some uproar or no cover graffiti on :)
Peterlee had quite a big punk scene back then. I wasn't into it that much but remember a few. Lass called mary(?) Lad called fish,, i went to wellfield and there was a lot there.
Knew they'd reformed, the mrs gets her hair cut off the mrs of one of them.
I work in billingham and every so often i see an old punk walking about with the mohican/leather jacket/tartan trousers look. Great to see, i had a mohican but the only way i'd have one nowadays is if it was painted on in felt tip.

I remember it being a greeny/blue colour when I worked at CAT with you.

Do you have any recollections of the ‘punk’ era in the North East? By that I mean the ‘local scene’. Not famous, good, or bad, punk bands you may have seen or met but the LOCAL proponents, movers and shakers, musicians, and various ne’er-do-wells that were around and active between 1976 and 1980 that would have been considered ‘punk’

Were YOU in a band or around then, organising gigs, posting flyers, engaged in activity? Did you witness local punk bands ‘breaking through’, crashing and burning and/or making fools of themselves? Do you have tales to tell?

Let’s hear about it. Post on the thread or send me a PM if you want to protect your anonymity.

A book is in preparation that will feature contributions from all the local luminaries and those who went further afield or engaged in activity around that period. Glen Matlock and Steve Jones have offered comment and guidance but otherwise all the ‘names’ so far are NE based or originated.

No benefit will accrue and none is offered. Just a chance to reminisce.

I’m not the author.
Me mate's brother's band, The Carpettes...

Currently turning out as The Straw Carpettes/Alternative Carpettes IIRC.

Great pic of your dad there marra.
Me and my mate used to help out on roadie duties with the band he was in around 1977/78.They used to practice on Friday nights in the YMCA on Toward road, and afterwards we would go to the Burton House for a few jars.
Your dad was drumming for Mustang - a rock/blues covers band in the mid to late 70's around the town.
The lead singer was Dave (Finna) Finlay, Roxy on guitar, Geo on bass, Neil (winker) Watson on rhythm and your dad on drums.

I also remember that Winker's brother - Tim Watson the "rat catcher" - played bass with Straw Dogs when Olga and Pete Zulu were in them.
A lad called "Teacake" was their roadie.

Happy days with your dad. 😎
