Running Thread 2018

Cheers mate, so did you stop running for a bit or cut mileage? Is it back to normal now? I have rested it 4 days now and still aches when I get out of bed!
I more than halved my miles, went from 70/80 a week to 20-40. The 40 weeks were rare. I stopped interval training too, was really just wanting to keep a bit of fitness and keep a bit of fat off. I’m back to normal now but it took 8 weeks. I’ve lost all my pace, gonna be a hard few weeks to get it back.

I had a couple physio sessions too which helped. It confirmed it wasn’t a stress fracture and was muscle related. You could do this yourself, they just nipped my shin in various points and if I felt further pain then this indicated a fracture. My issue was related to the inside of my calf where it joins the shin, rather than the main meat of the muscle. I wasn’t really rolling this bit of the muscle prior to the problem. . I do now.

Good luck

Got an appointment next month to get the biomechanics of my foot looked at. Not sure if it will make much difference but worth a try.
Few times I've been tempted to try a 5k and see how it goes but each day I have it pencilled in, my foot is swollen again.:(
Thoroughly bored of the gym now but hopefully I've kept some semblance of fitness.

I now have my 2nd stint of shin splints in 2 years....3 weeks before York....physio has strapped me up and advised me not to run the marathon .....don't fancy ending up with a stress fracture either

I've been tending to do 5 miles during the week and 10k at the weekend. It's been months since my last run was longer than 10K - that was 8 miles back in January, which happens to be the longest I've ever done. Every time I get up to that distance I seem to pick up an injury and by the time I've recovered I have lost a bit of stamina and have to drop back down to 5k-5m and work back up, where it all happens again.

Where I believe I've been going wrong is that I push myself for a time on every run. So rather than doing say a shorter run with intervals during the week and longer 'steady' runs at the weekend, I just go for it and try to go as fast as possible every run. So I've decided to do that, more of a 'training for a race' kind of regime. I was reading it's good to train your body to run harder with interval training and to run for longer with easier, long runs. For example if you're training for a half marathon and aim for 1hr45, you should train by running for that length of time, but obviously it'll be a slower than race pace so you may only cover 11 miles or so.

Anyway, I went out yesterday morning, bearing in mind that I've never gone for an 'easy' run, with the aim of doing 7 1/2 - 8 miles. Ran at around 8min30 per mile average instead of the usual 8mins, and felt so good I kept on going. Ended up doing 9 miles, running for 1hr 17 mins. Apart from the last 1/4 mile where my legs started feeling heavy, it was great! Really chuffed with myself!!

Aiming for a half marathon now, any tips or thoughts on what I've posted above?

Definitely stop doing this, run 2/3 harder runs/training sessions/effort/tempo runs etc per week and do the rest of your mileage steady away. Even Mo Farah can’t hammer it every time he runs :)

First ever 10 miles tonight. Felt a bit tired near the end, but will he aiming for the 13.1 in a few weeks.

1hr 28 minutes and 50 seconds. So think I should manage under the 2hr mark which would be amazing.

Just hope my injuries don't come back and bit me on the arse since I'm pushing myself with these distances.

Anyone doing the xcountry at wrekenton on saturday.... gentle plod round for me as lost my mojo a bit over the last few weeks.....

Gently easing my way back into it though.... think its largely due to not training for any half marathons this year so not had any long runs to aim for

Aye. Going to try and find a pub to watch the first half of the match.
